Description of 1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto Convertible

1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto Convertible. 4 Cylinder 1600 CC Gasoline Engine with 7,000 Miles, 3,000 Miles since 1976. Manual 5-Speed Transmission. 2 Door. RWD.In 1966 Alfa Romeo produced what might in today's jargon be called the "Beta edition" of the Duetto. The first year's production was very limited and Alfa Romeo did not generally export it to the United States. Today the 1966 edition is rare in the United States and elsewhere. Purchased in 1976 in Vicenza Italy, this car listed is in very good condition. It has never been restored, but well maintained. Finding a market value for this gem is difficult. Extrapolating from National Automobile Dealers Association data the asking price tops out at $140,000. Today's asking price is $95,000.00.Seller's Notes: Even if you aren't a collector of Alfa Romeos or Italian sports cars in general, you will want to consider owning this very special car. It's a fun car to drive with a soft ride and easy handling. It's a classic, a 50-year-old design that still looks good today. In fact, this car may look better today than the day I bought it. (see below)The Alfa Romeo "Spider 1600" was introduced to the world on March 10th, 1966. The unofficial name for the first generation of this Italian classic is "Duetto”, implying a small car built for two. The Duetto was a major change in design for Alfa Romeo, so in 1966 Alfa Romeo chose to hold their cards close to their vest and not sell the Duetto in the United States. Americans had to wait till 1967 to get their hands on one. After the Duetto made an appearance in the movie The Graduate it became very popular in the U.S. The car I'm selling was number 700 off the line. You'll be hard pressed to find a Duetto built earlier. A national registry lists only 34 in the U.S. Like the '64 Mustang the Duetto was the start of a line that lasted for decades. The car I'm selling has never been restored. It has been well maintained and is in very good condition. Finding a market value for this gem is difficult. I found no listing of 1966 Duettos in any major listing of used car values. I took the values of the three other convertibles Alfa made in 1966 from National Automobile Dealers Association data. The closest comparable comes in at $140,000.00.At the time I took the pictures the odometer read 6853. Half of that is the miles I put on since 1976. The spark plugs were changed along with their wires and timing adjusted not long ago. The tires are very low mileage and the wheels are newly painted. The car is mostly original but not completely. In the first decade of it's life this Alfa was used as an ordinary car, driven every day. It has new front brakes. Early on I put in a radio/cassette player (very 1970s). The convertible top is new. The car came with a hard top that fastens using the convertible connections. It still comes with the car. If you live where there is cold weather the hard top can be very useful. The carpeting is old but not original. I've been told the seats are not original. They are seats that were in the car when I bought it so I don't know. The car has lost some minor pieces of chrome and the headlight covers. My Alfa Romeo is a must see and drive! If you can come see for yourself, I'm sure you'll agree that you won't find another one in this condition again. I'm not selling the car because I need to. I'm selling it because it's time for me to pass it on to someone who will enjoy it for the next 40 years. Call today and I'll tell you all about my car. Then make an appointment for to come see it.Original 1600 Duetto SpecificationsDebut: 3/1966Production: 1966-68 (chassis numbers start at 660001 - this car is 660700)Engine/Transmission: Longitudinally-mounted front engine (gearbox & clutch in-unit)Rear wheel drive.Engine: Model 536Carburetor: 2-2 barrel side draft (1 barrel per cylinder)Cylinders: 4 in-lineBore and stroke: 78 x 82mmCylinder capacity: 1570 cm 3Compression ratio: 9:1Timing gear: Two overhead valves inclined at 80° in v-formation per cylinder; twinoverhead camshafts driven by two chains with a tensioner.Maximum power: 125 hp at 6000 rpmFuel tank capacity: 46 liters (12.15 US gallons 1.85 in reserve)Coolant capacity: 7.5 liters (1.98 gal)Oil capacity: 5.7 liters (1.5 gal)TransmissionClutch: Dry single-plateGearbox: five-speed all synchromesh & reverseGear ratios: First 3.304:1 Second 1.988:1 Third 1.355:1 Fourth 1:1 Fifth 0.791:1Reverse 3.01:1Gear shift: centrally mounted leverDrive shaft: DividedDifferential: Hypoid bevel gearDifferential ratio: 9/41 = 4.555:1Chassis and bodyType: Two-seater spider (design & production by Pininfarina)Structure: MonocoqueWheelbase: 2250 mm (88.58 inches)Track: Front 1310 mm (51.57 inches) Rear 1270 (50 inches)Length: 4250 mm (167.32 inches)Width: 1630 mm (64.17 inches)Height 1290 mm (50.79 inches)Minimum ground clearance: 120 mm (4.72 inches)Suspension: front, independent with wishbones, coil springs, shocks and anti-roll bar.Rear, live axle with radius arms, central axle bracket location coil springs and shocks.Brakes: Four-wheel discs.Steering: Recirculating ball or worm and roller.Turning radius: 10.5 m (34.45 feet)Electrical system: 12 voltsGenerator: 300wBattery 40AhWeight: 990 kg (2182.57 pounds) to 1200 kg (2645.54 pounds)PerformanceMaximum speed: over 185 km/h (115 mph)The amount of fun you'll have driving: Immeasurable *This 1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto is located in Urbana, Illinois.
