Description of 1968 AMC AMX

This 1968 AMC AMX is rare, powerful, interesting, and quite custom. It has a great presentation that makes it easy to enjoy showing off everything from the side pipes to the folder or interesting original documents. And at a price like this, it's also absolutely irresistible.

This is the first year for the AMX. It's now a legend in the muscle car scene, so it's especially impressive to find one with some great paperwork, including the dealer invoice, warranty card, and much more that documents a careful and proud first owner of one of these rare inaugural AMXs. There were only 6725 examples made in 1968, so these are a rare sight over half a century later. And even if you can find another '68, we doubt it will be as interesting as this one. There was an upgrade to a custom metallic blue later in life, and they even painted the bumpers to match. So it looks like one form-fitting design. These were built from day one with a speedy style that was all part of the overall appearance. We cherish the first few years of the AMX because it was built on a special short wheelbase. It helped give it the right proportions with a long hood and a sloping fastback style. And that high-octane feeling is taken up a notch here with all the custom additions. The white racing stripes, louvered rear window, and Eagle Eye driving lights make this look like a Trans Am car. The lightweight fiberglass hood carries the famous air scoops of later AMXs. The 16-inch Centerline wheels give you plenty more polished alloy to look at, but we bet real enthusiasts also notice the double red line tires. And filling the space in-between the wheels are some awesome side pipes.

As an original AMX, there's only seating for two people, but they get plenty of space and comfort. Great-looking bucket seats, crisp door panels, and fresh carpeting all look nice rendered in a muscle car friendly black. Plus, this shade is a nice complement to the wood paneling accenting the doors and dash. You get a great chrome and wood Grant three-spoke sports steering wheel, and behind that, the instruments are housed in deep individual pods that give the speedo and tach a hint of European sophistication. In the center that are cool Go Pack style gauges, and the radio has been upgraded to an AM/FM/cassette, but it's an older unit that helps retain the overall very vintage atmosphere of this distinct classic.

When you pop the hood, you see what's believed to be the original AMC hardy and powerful 343 cubic-inch V8. As a true T-code car, it's great to see the optional motor and four-barrel carburetor correctly in the engine bay. In fact, all the main pieces continue to look AMC-correct. The V8 fires up with authority as those side pipes let out a true growl. But driving this AMX is quite an easy time thinks to power steering, power brakes, and the three-speed automatic transmission.

The impressive full paperwork file includes the original bill of sale, dealer invoice, warranty card, title documentation, loan payment receipts, owner's manual, and AMC literature. Unique muscle cars with this much history and appeal don't come around very often, and they aren't nearly this affordable. Don't miss your opportunity, call today!
