There is good reason why the BMW 2002 built up a cult following since its introduction in 1971. A svelte body, lively 2 litre, 4 cylinder engine, and inimitable styling all came together to create a small, fun car that was just as much at home on the track, or in the dirt, as it was on the street. With numerous wins in Trans Am, Endurance, and Rally Racing, the 2002 helped to carry the torch for BMW Motorsport throughout the 1970s, and is even seen by some as the spiritual ancestor to the vaunted E30 M3. Nonetheless, the 2002's popularity has only continued to increase in recent years, with a healthy collector market springing up for restored, and ready-to-restore, low mileage examples.
The vehicle seen in this listing is a ready-to-restore 1972 model with just under 30 thousand miles on the clock. It features original exterior panels and trim, a 2 liter engine mated to a 4-speed gearbox, and all-original upholstery and trim. Moreover, this example features the very desirable "roundie" tail lamps, as well as a set of four bumper-mounted fog/driving lamps. With some body and mechanical work, this 2002 can easily become the track-day zipper, rallycross monster, or cars-and-coffee cruiser that you've been dreaming of.
Vehicle is currently in non-running, non-drivable condition. However, it is an excellent candidate for restoration.
This vehicle has been stored in a heated, covered warehouse for several years. As such, it will need to be picked up from seller, or trailered to the buyer's destination. Buyer agrees to local pickup or payment of applicable costs to have vehicle shipped to them.
