Description of 1976 BMW 2002

1976 BMW 2002

This is the car that reversed the Bavarian Motor Werks' ailing production slump and literally put BMW on the road to success, while helping to spawn the immensely popular sport sedan category. Crossing several markets, it attracted the more mature, performance-oriented buyers who were enthusiastic about spirited driving, as well as those buyers with young families who needed a car that was as much fun to drive as their old MG but infinitely more reliable. The 2002 offered buyers both types of cars in a single, stylish package.

For consignment, this sedan sports car had a nine year run, and remained virtually the same throughout, with only minor changes. A body design with a thin body style it definitely has a cult like following and remains one of the bestselling BMW models of all time. A 2.0 liter car with a Solex 2-bbl carburetor, nice interior and good exterior, your chance to be a member of the "cult".

Exterior
All bathed in Maroon, straight steel panels are rust free, however show slight dents and dings. Paint is very shiny and is a deep Maroon. Trimmings are all straight and shiny, and the roofline is very tall to provide the passengers with near panoramic views when inside this smaller car. On the front is the iconic dual kidney bean slightly raked grille and has the large energy absorbing bumpers and larger square tail lamps. On all 4 corners are K-1 racing aluminum 6 spoke wheels wrapped in good rubber.

Interior
Tan vinyl seats nice and firm still filled with their horse hair stuffing remain like new. So do the door panels also in tan. A simple square and rectangle dash has wood appliqu surround for the instruments, and center console houses the gearshift lever, and a storage glovebox. Clean tan carpet covers the floors, and in back is a well preserved, seldom used rear bench. This car is equipped with A/C, and an aftermarket Clarion AM/FM Cassette player. A shout out to the trunk which is lined in gray, and looking good.

Drivetrain
Under the front flipping hood, a single-overhead-cam four-cylinder engine that is very durable and has a good amount of nickel in its cylinder block, which allows the engine to travel well over 200,000 miles before needing a rebuild, sits proudly and all cleaned and polished. On back is a four-speed Borg-Warner gearbox that is very durable and well maintained. A Solex 2-barrel carburetor is atop, and on back are 3.90 gears for the rear axle.

Undercarriage
No rust on this painted over in black undercarriage. Shock towers, and floorpans are solid with the passenger pan being repaired at one time. Independent coil over front suspension is noted and Independent coil spring for the back are seen. Disc brakes are on front and drums on the rear.

Drive-Ability
Stepping inside this time machine it was a pleasure. Schnell comes to mind when I pushed the accelerator, and the German engineering took over and allowed me to have this car handle like it is on rails, accelerate with neck snapping speed, and stop on a dime.

A fine example of Black Forest engineering in a neat package. We do not see many of these and if I'm not mistaken this is Classic Auto Mall's first one! Nothing wrong with being a member of this cult!
