Description of 1986 BMW 3-Series

This car is almost all original condition. The only changes to the car have been the Alpine Media/Radio I added when I bought the car. I am only the second owner and have had the car since 2009. The original owner had the wheels chromed at the dealer as well. The car is an ES model which is much more rare than the 325i or 325e models. Basically this car has most of the luxury features of the 325is. but does not have leather seats or the smaller 6 cylinder. This car has the larger 2. 7 liter straight 6 engine. Coupled with a 4-speed automatic this car is a very smooth driver. Odometer Status The odometer did break about 3 years ago (common problem with plastic gearing most likely) at 86. 65. I only drive this car about 4 miles per day average so actual mileage is probably around 88-89. 00 at this point. I have a service record from 3/2/2011 for example where the car had 86. 78 miles. Other equipment and status: - Engine (runs well & oil just changed. Minor oil leak likely from aging gasket) - 4 speed Automatic (fully functional) - Anti-lock Brakes (seems to work as intended) - Steel power sunroof (fully functional and not leaked ever) - Power Windows (fully functional) - Power Mirrors (functional but finicky) - Dash Computer (shows MPG. range. Avg. MPH. etc. Fully functional) - Alpine Media Stereo/Radio with original BMW Speakers (works wired with MP3/iPhones/Etc. ) - Air Conditioning (worked when I got the car. but Freon line was damaged during a smog check so now non-functional. Line needs repair and recharge. ) - Heater (was not working when I got car. Likely needs new heater core. ) - Power Locks (working but hard to lock from drivers door. Been using trunk latch to easily lock car. I have an new remote kit that will go with car to do a wireless entry system. ) - Rear Window Defroster (damaged this when trying to remove old tinting from back window. Will run about $100-$150 to replace window with new heating elements. ) Mechanicals - Tires (replaced in 2011) - Battery (recently replaced) - Brain Box (replaced when first bought car 2009) - Starter (replaced Nov. 2014) In general the car runs very well and I have used it as a daily (to work) driver for many years now. The steering has always been a bit fluffy and at now almost 29 years old it probably needs a lot of care in the mounts. rubber. etc. areas. Don't buy this car if you don't have money to repair it! Overall it has been highly reliable for me (once the brain box was replaced when I first got it). The starter issue I had most recently has actually made the car much easier to start as that was starting to become an issue late last year. Exterior As far as I know the car is accident free and straight. The car has mostly the original paint. I did get the rear trunk lid and back section repainted (as the spoiler was starting to chip. etc). Also there was some minor rust around some areas of the trunk lid liner (only!). This was all fixed and painted over with Rustoleum. The respray work was done by a very good company locally. sadly they didn't match the color 100% due to the age of the original paint. It's not that noticeable though. The rubber around the bumper areas is visibly starting to show it's age. The aluminum bumpers themselves also have some pitting. The chromed road wheels also have some typical brake dust corrosion and pitting in some areas. There is some paint chipping on the front lower air dam (see photos). Almost all other issues are minor cosmetics as the car has been well taken care of over the last 28+ years. Interior The interior is in amazing condition considering the cars age. The drivers seat has wear from getting in and out. Passengers seat is like new. There are two cracks in the dash (very common issue) and I have pictures of those included. There is also a portion of the covering that is coming away from the top frontal headliner near where the rear view mirror is. I have the original floor mats. but they are in a pretty sad state. I also have the original BMW cassette/radio as well. I have tried to describe the car in the most honest way possible. If you grasp the rarity of a BMW 3-series with less than 100K miles on it than I think you will understand the true value of this 80's iconic car. I honestly believe the value of this model will be on the rise in the next 10 years. If you are a BMW enthusiast and want a truly original low mileage car. this one may be for you.
