The first generation Riviera was created byBuick to compete with Ford's highly successful 4 seat Thunderbird. Only the Buick division of GMoffered this body and chassis whereas Most GM bodies were shared by multiple divisions. Buick created additional exclusivity bydeliberately keeping production low.
