I bought this from a farmer that had it for a few years. Used frequently for short trips. They lived on gravel road and the truck was covered in dirt / dust when i got it. Starts up once you let the glow plug light go off - it fires right up. I plugged it in when it got below 40 and it liked to fire up in the morning just fine. Blows smoke when it starts ( what vw diesel doesnt ? ) I have driven this truck on several trips to omaha and back to pick up Vw parts ( 100 miles round trip ) Been alot of 40-50 mile commutes around while i have owned it also. What it needs / could use:Motor mounts - it vibrates and vibrates alot - previous owner used some foam sticky pads on some interior dash trim to stop the rattling but it could use some motor mounts soon. The lower column bushing / bearing - also vibrates at idle and it some what noisy. The vent windows had been taped shut as some point . there is tape residue on the passenger side. They stay some what shut . driver side clamp is removed but in the glove box. Headlight switch knob falls off when you pull it. All headlights . brakes lights . tail lights . blinkers . dome light even the cigarette light works. Rust:The driver side rear rocker behind door to the rear fender arch is rusty. There is also some behind the wheel on the driver side. The top of the passenger fender has a huge hole of rust . which is odd because the inner fender / structure / strut towers are in great condition and there is no visible rust in those common areas where rust is found on these older Vw trucks. There is a company on East Coast that makes a repair panel for the rocker for like $30. The inner fender wheel / lower by the floor board is rusty ( from previous owner letting dirt / mud sit ) The tailgate has a dent in the middle and it hard to open and close ( linkage might need replaced / lubed ) The rear bumper is not a factory rear bumper . looks like a front bumper upside down and installed - it is also missing the passenger end cap. Engine:Runs great - I have been driving it. No scared to jump in it and go. I replaced the vacuum pump ( it sits into the block where a gas distributor would go ) and i did NOT get is seated all the way and it splattered oil all over the engine bay ( been too cold to worry about cleaning it up ) The brakes were not working and this was the problem and i resolved it. With this truck only having 60hp ( 30 to the wheels ) the wide ratio 5th gear is great but going up hills is NOT so good. It runs out of power ( the gas motors do this also ) I typically drive is on highways at 65 and its great - it will get up to 75 on flat ground and hold it - but when going up a hill it falls off. ( i was going to buy an upgraded Injection pump which doubles the HP but decided to sell the truck instead ) The injection pump looks clean . not sure if it was resealed at some point recently but its clean and as mentioned above truck starts right up once glow plug light turns off. Interior:In great condition . besides the truck running so well. the interior is my second favorite part. the headliner and b pillars and behind the driver seat is nice tan vinyl material. The lower outer bolster on the driver seat is torn a little but the seats are still some what comfortable. The carpet is great . dash is perfect . windshield looks like its new and was recently replaced. Door panels are in great condition. Has a pair of rabbit old school floor mats. Overall:Great truck - I have had 10+ of these and this is my best running diesel one i have ever had. I have a TDI swap that I was going to swap into this truck ( just to have more power. my daily driver is a tuned 1998 Vw Jetta TDI ) but i have 5 Vw's / Projects and decided to sell the truck as I can not use it to haul both kids around. Its more of my " my time " truck. I love driving it. I have tons of spare parts and maintenance items available to go along with it ( at additional cost ) I have three more trucks that do NOT run.
