Everyone needs an old pickup truck. They are icons…a staple of the American landscape. Although Ford and Chevrolet have built millions of these over the past half-century, any have not survived the ravages of time and work.

It is clear that this Chevy led a different life than most trucks from the 50’s. Instead of being relegated to rust away in the back of a farm, his example was an Orange County restaurateur’s local “errand” machine. The original owner purchased this truck new in ’53 from his neighborhood Chevrolet dealer. He lived in Newport Beach, alifornia and needed a truck to run things down the road to his restaurant. Since he was the owner, e wanted something a bit nicer so he purchased the Deluxe 5-window model.

He kept the truck for 24-years until he passed away. His widow then sold it to his best friend who lived nearby. This owner kept the truck for 30-years. Sometime in the 1990’s he decided to restore the truck to make it a high level driver. It was repainted, rivetrain rebuilt, nd wood pickup refreshed. It was then retired to light weekend driving and car shows. This owner was friends with Mr. Crevier and stored the truck in his car club/museum in Costa Mesa, alifornia. He finally realized that he rarely used it, o he sold it to the current owner in 2008.

The current owner is a long-time auto collector and enthusiast in the Los Angeles area. Upon purchasing the truck, uickly went to work to make sure it was a good solid driver and made some tasteful upgrades including:

Saginaw 4-speed transmission with higher final gear for freeway use

Converted to 12-volt

Changed rear-end gears to 3.78

Built custom rack for rear bed (available for additional fee)

Fresh/Correct Firestone white wall tires from Coker Tire

The owner allowed the truck to be featured in several Jack-in-the-Box commercials as well as cameos in several movies (sorry, e don’t know exactly which ones).

Upon receiving the truck on consignment from the owner, e had our mechanic go through a few things and verify condition. The motor is strong and not many miles since the rebuild. The chassis/frame is very dry/straight and original (rare for this age truck). Furthermore he adjusted the shift linkage and replaced the drive belt. Also, n oil service was recently performed. The mechanic did note that all the lights operated properly except the rear brake lights (unless the headlights are on). All in all, e thought it was a very nice survivor.

The condition of this Chevy is quite good. There are no signs of abuse or neglect. The paint shows minimal wear. This is not an over-restored concours truck but rather a very nice survivor. The interior was restored over 10-years ago and although not correct, he upholstery is fresh with no tears. The retro-style radio works properly as do all the gauges.

California registration is paid through October of 2016.
