Description of 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS 396

What you are bidding on here is a very solid 1968 Camaro SS 396 4 speed. It is a factory Lemans Blue car. I recently purchased this car from an estate. This Camaro was purchased at Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach back in 2008. It sold there for $51,700. You can view the result if you look up Lot#943. At that time the consignor stated that they had owned the Camaro for 26 years. It was stated that the car was a 396/375 and that the breather, intake, and valve covers were original. The mileage was said to be original at 43,000. After talking to the gentleman that I purchased the car from I learned that it is not numbers matching. He had let a man inspect the car and the following info is what he found out. The engine code is T0304MY which decodes as a 396/325HP March 4 build. The block casting number is 3935440(hard to read but last 3 numbers are definitely 440). It does have a factory aluminum intake with the correct snowflake casting, so it may have been built to 375HP specs. The transmission is a Borg Warner with a 5-30-79 casting date. As I am sure you know, it is very difficult to prove a 1968 Camaro to be a true SS396 without the original drivetrain, protect-o-plate, or other factory documentation. There are certain things that this car has that indicate a factory big block 4 speed. There is a reinforcement ring around the shifter hole on the underside of the floor indicating that the car originally had a floor shift hole. The rear is a 12 bolt, code is BT032502 with an E underneath-which ID’s it as a 3.55 posi unit from March 25, which seems to coincide with the vin date. The rear springs have 5 leaves. The drivers side motor mount is taller than the passenger side motor moun, 2” vs. 1 3/8 indicating big block motor mounts. They don’t appear to have ever been replaced. The speedo cable passes through the “Muncie” hole on the firewall. It has a big block heater core-feed pipes come out in the middle of the cover vs. the extreme right hand side. Radiator has a 23” core. The tire pressure sticker on the inside of the glovebox has the “AH” code in the bowtie and the correct F70x14RL tire for the SS. The duals hangers are held to the frame with what seem to be threaded holes in the rear frame rails on both sides, indicating an original dual exhaust. The hood has the correct big block snorkel trim vs. the ribbed trim. The rear panel is also painted black which is correct for an SS.

Ok, now for the condition of the car. The great thing about this Camaro is that it is rust free. The frame, floors, and trunk are rock solid. There is also no bubbling in the quarters or rockers. The gaps are great. The doors open and close with ease. The paint on the car still shows very well but it is has flaws. It appears to be laquer so some of it may even be original. There are several touch ups and the rockers and quarters have stone chips. I have tried to show all of the flaws in the pictures. The interior in the car is very good. The seats, door panels, and headliner appear to be original and are still in excellent condition. The carpet is original and the drivers side does show some wear. The car has 3 of its original floor mats. The glass is excellent and both the drivers and passenger side windows roll up and down as they should. The steering wheel looks to have been replaced at some point. It is a correct SS wheel but you can see some blue paint underneath the black. The engine starts without hesitation and the transmission shifts flawlessly. I noticed while driving it that the gas gauge does not work and the car pulls to the left a little when hitting the brakes. It may need a front end alignment. All in all… just a very solid and dependable big block SS that you can drive and enjoy that will be a crowd pleaser at any local show or cruise night.
