Chevrolet didn’t waste any time tailoring its then-new Camaro to take on Ford’s Mustang in the Sports Car Club of America’s (SCCA) Trans Am competition in 1968 and you shouldn’t waste any time visiting MotoeXotica Classic Cars to check out this red hot Camaro Z28 that came from the great state of Texas!

Assembled in GM’s Norwood, Ohio (code N) factory in May or June 1968, this car was delivered to Nalley Chevrolet, Inc., 2555 Stewart Ave., SW in Atlanta, Georgia. This car left the factory with the following optional equipment – no charge black vinyl trim, no charge Matador Red exterior, heavy-duty, close-ratio, four-speed manual transmission, special performance equipment, tinted glass, rally wheels, air spoiler equipment, rally sport equipment, front and rear floor mats, auxiliary lighting, AM/FM radio, power front disc brakes, center console, Positraction, sport steering wheel and special instrumentation.

Outside, this car’s Matador Red (code RR) paint with black racing stripes is in very good condition, with only minor blemishes showing on the hood, left front fender, spoiler and passenger door. The trim is in likewise good shape and so are the glass panels. The vehicle lights are crack-free and clear. Car rides on period correct Goodyear F70-15 Polyglas tires surrounding rally wheels with beauty rings. The body panels are straight all around, the engine bay is very tidy and the battery appears new.

Under that special, ducted cowl hood is a 302 CID Turbofire V-8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor, high-winding, solid-lifter cam and an 11:1 compression ratio. The motor is the correct MO code, but non-matching (#18N428329) and is mated to a close-ratio, four-speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter. Out back is a Positraction rear axle with 4.10 gearing. GM created the 302 V-8 to satisfy the SCCA’s racing engine displacement limit of 305 CID. This design, combined with special modifications for high-performance use made for a unique, high-revving powerplant that helped forge the legend of the Z/28. Tell tale signs of this 1968 Z28 is the window sticker showing the car was ordered with the Z28 performance option. Inside the glovebox is the original genuine round tire pressure sticker, that along with the window sticker helps verify that this Camaro is a genuine factory 1968 Z28. Further, the rear-end has a 12-bolt accompanied by the heavy duty 4 leaf axle suspension.

Inside, the black vinyl (code E) front bucket and rear bench seats are in excellent condition as is the matching carpet and headliner. The dashboard, with its woodgrain accents, is crack-free and in fine form. Car features a Tic-Toc-Tach, a tachometer with a clock on the same dial face. It was only produced for 1968. The center console contains full auxiliary instrumentation. The original three-spoke steering wheel is in very good shape, as are the black door panels, rear- and sideview mirrors and Hurst shifter. Completing the interior is a Best Sound AM/FM radio with cassette deck.

Besides the aforementioned Mustang, competition to this Camaro in 1968 included Mercury’s Cougar, Plymouth’s Barracuda, Pontiac’s Firebird Trans Am and AMC’s Javelin.

Documentation includes window sticker, original owner’s manual, a copy of Car Life Magazine’s Camaro Z/28 road test from July 1968 and color photos of this car.
