The star of Chevrolet's lineup in 1950 was a 2-door called the "Bel Air." An inspired design, during the ensuing years the Bel Air 2-Door became a great sales success.

By the mid 50's, the Bel Air was Chevrolet's top-of-the-line series, better equipped than the 210 or 150 models. Chevy finally introduced a one-piece front windshield, the PowerGlide automatic transmission and did away with the floor mounted starter button in favor of key starting. In 1954, power steering was first introduced.

A highly optioned '54 Bel Air Convertible with factory PowerGlide transmission, power steering and power seat is very sought after today and among the most astute collectors.

The 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible presented here, VIN *C54N034071* is in excellent, thoroughly restored condition and is equipped with all the above options; and much more!

During an extensive restoration in 2011, the engine, transmission and ancillaries were rebuilt, body and paint professionally refinished, brightwork re-chromed and interior reupholstered as new. The car has been garaged, covered, pampered and driven sparingly ever since.

Let's inspect this fine automobile thoroughly now; top to bottom, inside and out.

Exterior:

Sparkling chrome everywhere!

Bel Air's front-end features extra-cost Deluxe front bumper guard...

...and streamline moderne hood ornament.

With new motor andfresh hydraulics, the power Stayfast Canvas convertible top with crystal clear, zip-down rear window and working interior light retracts smoothly.

Utmostly elegant with its fully retractable side windows and skirted rear fenders, the Bel Air Convertible sports the utterly desirable original color combo of two-tone Red and white with a black, canvas top.

During its loving restoration and recent refreshing, great care has been used to make even the smallest details look good.

The finish is in virtually unmarked condition, very smooth and glossy, void of any dings or dents; only a few minor blems.

Add to this the immaculate brightwork, refinished at great cost, with only a couple scrapes and scuffs, even the fussiest collector will be happy with the looks of this amazing survivor.

Nothing spells "Here come the Fifties" like a Continental Kit, a hard-to-find, very expensive option in the day!

This one's 100% complete, like new, and fully functional.

PowerGlide Transmission emblem is revealed behind the Continental Kit

Note also the Deluxe towel rack bumper guard and heavy-duty bumper ends. (Sunglasses may be required!)

Weatherstripping is in very good to excellent condition throughout the car.

Every big American car of the Fifties needs a set of wide whitewall tires.

Chevy proudly displays its original steel wheels, fitted with polished stainless hub caps and excellent B.F. Goodrich Silvertown 4-Ply WWW tires of the size 6.70-15 all around.

Check out the optional chrome fender mud guard in the above photo.

(note a smallsection on the bumper where the chrome has peeled off)

While we're down on one knee, let's take a close look underneath.

More than a shiny finish, is a healthy chassis.

Befitting an always garaged car, the Bel Air's undercarriage presents itself corrosion-free.

64 years old, it doesn't appear that the Chevrolet has ever needed any major collision repair either; it's as solid as a rock and ready for another 64 years of carefree cruising.

Detailed shots show nothing but healthy frame and sheet metal with minimal fluid leaks.

Lots of newer suspension components are present and the brakes were freshly serviced.

Let's have a look inside now!

Bel Air's cockpit looks bone stock.

Lovingly color-coordinated by GM's design studio, the car features its uncracked, original, ocean liner-sized steering wheel with full chrome horn ring and "Power Steering" motif button.

Notice the optional, driver and passenger's door pillar-mounted spot lights.

2-tone vinyl bench seats, front and rear.

The '54 Bel Air was advertised as "A full six-seater with added shoulder-level width." Everything is invitingly clean.

Original speedometer and radio are present.

Currently, the radio lights up but produces no sound and the speedo is in-op. True miles are unknown.

Factory gauges and--standard on Bel Air models--radio and heaterwork except for the clock which -- like the car's design -- is timeless!

Working power front seat is another rare factory option.

When the top is down, the new rear boot snaps on in seconds and complements the immaculate interior.

Let's have a peek inside the trunk:

Carpet-lined trunk is very spacious.

Floor is free of rust.

A picture tells a thousand words; this giant trunk is immaculate!

Finally, let's take a close look under the hood.

Engine and mechanical:

The toothbrush-clean engine compartment houses Chevy's pre-V8 workhorse, the big, inline six, here coupled with a 2-speed PowerGlide automatic transmission.

The straight six runs as good as it looks: with new battery, it starts instantly, idles smoothly, and does not display any bad manners, such as smoking or unusual noises.

Power steering and auxiliary oil filter are nice factory options.

Oil pressure and temperature remain consistent - even in hot weather or when stuck in heavy traffic (or parades!).

New 6-volt battery shown above.

All in all, this engine and drivetrain are in excellent overall condition.

Drivability:

Driving this immaculate Chevrolet feels like true time travel, back to an era that was fun and carefree.

Surprisingly perhaps, the Bel Air is no lumberingly slow dinosaur, but a contemporary performer, feeling equally at home around town and on the open road.

Even California's crowded freeways are not a challenge for the Chevy.

Abundant torque from its big six with PowerGlide transmission makes for smooth acceleration.

Braking is very good, handling feels secure with power steering; a first for 1954!

Thankfully, the car still features its factory 6-Volt electrical system; all lights, blinkers and switches appear to be working fine.

With power-top up or down, you will be very happy behind the wheel of this Bel Air.

These early Fifties cars were not weighed down by exaggerated body work and multitudes of electric gadgets; they are relatively lightweight and therefore easy to drive.

Nothing's as stylish as an old Bel Air; back in the day, the '54s where rightfully billed as "The Hot Ones!"

The car performs flawlessly; it could be used with equal pride as a daily driver or Sunday-only show stopper.

Classic car insurance is very affordable, spare parts are universally available and, best of all, this vintage Chevy will never go out of style!

Here's a unique opportunity to acquire one of the finest remaining examples of an iconic American automobile, Chevrolet's flagship for 1954.

It features the right colors and has been fitted with all the options one could wish for.

Why restore a mediocre example when you can own one that's instantly ready to go?
