Description for Chevrolet El Camino 1970

Up for your consideration is a documented 1970 El Camino 396 Super Sport (SS). This is a factory built 396 SS and I have the Original Chevrolet Build Sheet to back it up. I've owned it for over 23 years. Shortly after purchasing the car in 1995 I started a on the frame restoration which took approximately 12 years. For the last 10 plus years it's spent most of the time stored on my 4 post storage lift. Although a bulk of the restoration work was done years ago I continued to make improvements such new interior in 2014, new fuel tank and tires in 2018. Considering it spent most of it's time in Southern California there was very little rust to deal with. As with most if not all all El Camino's the bed pans were rusted so I had them professionally replaced. It also looks like the previous owner had the rear portion of front fenders and rear portion of quarter panels replaced with new patch panels. When I purchased the car I was told the car was never involved in an accident and it's still the case today. The odometer currently shows 10K miles (TMU).

Key factory installed options:

  • SS 396 Conversion (Opt. Code ZL3)
  • V8 396 CI 4 BBL (Opt. Code L34)
  • Special Ducted Hood (Cowl Induction) (Opt. Code ZL2)
  • 12 Bolt/Positraction (Opt. Code G80)
  • 331 Ratio Axle (Opt. Code G94)
  • Exterior Ornament Emblems SS396 (Opt. Code B79)
  • Hood & Deck Stripes (Opt. Code D88)
  • Dual Exhaust (Opt. Code N10)
  • 3 Speed Auto (Turbo 400) Transmission (Opt. Code M40)
  • SS Instrument Cluster (GG)
  • 14" SS Wheels

Other factory installed options:

  • Power Steering
  • Air Conditioner (not hooked up)
  • Power Brakes
  • Power Disk Brakes, Front
  • Tilt Steering Wheel
  • Rally Steering Wheel
All options are still present with the exception of the following components:
  • Original 396 (350HP) block was replaced in 1993 with a period correct 396 block (T0527IV, 325HP, Casting #3935440).
  • Original Turbo Transmission was replaced in 1993 with a rebuilt Turbo 400.
  • Original 14" SS Wheels were replaced.

The car was resprayed in 1992 by the original owner and I did a color (Metallic Grey) change in 2001. Unfortunately I was never happy with how the respray so I vinyl wrapped it (Matte Black) in 2014. The body was and still is in excellent condition prior to applying the vinyl wrap, there was no rust and little to no body filler. I've attached a photo of the car prior to the vinyl wrap application. When the car was resprayed in 2001 I had the hood stripes and tailgate sprayed a darker shade of grey, those colors were left exposed when the vinyl was applied, see photos. The process of applying the vinyl went well but there are a few areas where it's not perfect, see photos. If you don't like the vinyl wrapped it can be removed easily. As for the bed, applying vinyl was not an option so I shot the bed with black Plastic Dip so it also can be easily peeled off.

In addition to the above factory options, the following performance upgrades were installed:

  • Stainless Steel Brake Lines

  • The factory AM/FM Stereo is not working.
  • The Air Conditioning System is not operational. A/C Compressor and other components were removed but are available and will accompany the car.
  • A/C/Heater fan switch doesn't work.

If you're wondering why I've decided to sell it now, it's simple, I've acquired a couple other cars over the years and I just don't drive this one enough, it should be driven and enjoyed.
