Description of 1966 Chevrolet Corvair

This 1966 Corvair Corsa may look a bit rough at first. but look deeper and you will see a very nice project that has already had most of the “heavy lifting” done for you. The desirable 2-door Corsa is arguably one of the prettiest Chevrolet’s of the 1960’s. and with the changes made in the 1965 model year. a seriously good car as well. The rear suspension was adapted from the Corvette and sprung with coil springs in the rear. and many other handling tweaks were made to give the compact Chevrolet huge potential. This particular example comes with a truly amazing file full of period correspondence. manuals and even invoices from John Fitch and Company of Falls Village. Connecticut; builders of the highly desirable Fitch Sprint. While the Fitch Sprint fiberglass buttresses and “Sprint” badges are not present. this car does have many of the Fitch parts well documented. Letters in the history file dated from 1966 show correspondence between the original owner and John Fitch and Co. . Inc regarding the purchase and fitment of Sprint components. The following items were purchased. many fitted at Fitch’s shop: Fitch leather covered steering wheelG. T. Suspension packageFitch Steering Damper (a Delco Corvette part. with special brackets)Metallic brake liningsTuned length dual mufflersHeel and Toe bracket (a special Fitch design) Shift knobSeat bracketIECO Ram Air induction kit with Carter AFB single four-barrel carburetor Also included in the file are stacks of service receipts. the original warranty booklet and handbook. period articles and catalogs and even letters of praise for the Corvair to General Motors. Clearly. this Corvair was owned by a true enthusiast who wanted to get the best out of his new purchase and who understood the amount of potential in the 1966 Corvair platform. Structurally. the body is very solid with excellent new floors installed. There are two small. non-structural areas that still need some attention with the welder; the lower left quarter panel and a small spot at the base of the windshield. Otherwise. it just needs to be lined up and the body work can get underway. The paint is largely stripped. revealing a solid and straight body. Doors open and close well. indicating the floors were done correctly. A large amount of spare parts are included. not limited to: New interior door panels. original exterior trim. lights and lenses. glass (including some extra pieces). interior fittings. carpet. and assorted hardware. Front and rear seats have been retrimmed in new white vinyl and all of the original instruments are included in the correct binnacle. A new (and rare!) wrinkle finish glovebox assembly is also included. It appears the Fitch heel and toe bracket and seat extension are missing. though thanks to strong club support. a set of engineering drawings is included to re-create those parts. Also missing is the IECO air cleaner housing for the 4bbl carburetor. While we cannot guarantee the presence of every last component or bit of hardware. we can say that there is a comprehensive amount of parts to get at least 90% of the car back together. This would make a great basis for a racing car. rally car or perhaps a Fitch Sprint recreation you could put your personal mark on. It runs and drives well (though needs some brake work). We can provide video of it running for serious buyers. It is located in Bethlehem. PA and is available for viewing by appointment. High resolution photos are available upon request.
