Description of 1958 Chevrolet El Camino |
I am listing this Australian Ute as an El Camino because there really isn't a category for this car and I need people to be able to find it. Ute is short for utility and in Australia a ute is a 2-door truck based on a passenger car chassis. This Australian Chrysler Ute was imported to the United States in 2007, I have the paperwork. The health of the fellow that imported it went downhill and I bought it from him in 2010. The car was stripped to bare metal before painting. They must not have used salt on the streets in Australia because there was no rust. One metal patch was welded in on the right side and there were no dents. I was able to buy many mechanical parts I needed from U.S. vendors because it is basically the same as an American Plymouth. The engine is a 230 flathead six which is very common in old Mopars in the U.S. The transmission is a 3 speed manual on the column, and you shift with your left hand. It runs and drives as it should, it is driven at least once a month. All the lights work and the temperature and gas gauges work. The brakes work fine and there are no leaks. The tires are good but old. The radiator has been recored and it doesn't overheat. The paint job is excellent and the chrome and trim are very good. The center section of the rear bumper is stainless steel. The original hub caps are stamped with the Chrysler "Forward Look" logo. About 300 Wayfarers per year were sold in Australia from 1958 to 1961. It is guaranteed to be the only one at any car show and it attracts a lot of attention. There is good information about it at allpar.com/world/royal.html I have many more pictures including the car sanded to bare metal and the car before it was sanded. Please email and I will be glad to send them. I have owned it for 10 years. It has been a lot of fun but it is time for me to get a new toy. It is hard to put a value on this car, so I am selling it at no reserve. It has a clear Florida title and is located near Orlando, FL |
