Description of 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

1971 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

The 1971 Chevrolet Corvette is one of the least changed from the previous year. This was the aftermath of the labor problems during '69 and '70. The biggest changes are in the motor to reduce the octane requirements from previous years as mandated by GM. This took higher priority than any cosmetic changes. One thing that was changed was the parking light lenses, most 71's have amber lenses although some early production models have clear. The resin process used to form body parts was also updated to increase quality. This was the last year for the M22 "Rock Crusher" heavy duty transmission. It was named the "Rock Crusher" because of the sounds it made when shifting. Still no black Vettes' this year on the standard order sheet.

For consignment, a 1971 Stingray "Sugar Scoop" version of the classic Corvette. Almost showroom looking, and not too much seen Mille Miglia Red over black vinyl version. Very nice and straight immaculate fiberglass and chrome, this car will have you seeing red. And this year we are still using chrome for the trimmings so it's a bonus! The only downside is that this car carries a reconstructed title, the history behind that title branding is unknown.

Exterior
Mille Miglia Red in near perfect condition, a very nicely done respray covers the exterior. Chrome bumpers, and all britework are like new. In 1971, fender flares were designed into the body contours to reduce wheel-thrown debris damage. Egg-crate grills with matching front fender side vents and larger squared front directional lamps are noted and correct for this year. The previously round dual exhaust outlets were made larger and rectangular in shape and can be seen at the rear of the Stingray along with the split bumper. A very good condition matching removable panel "T" hard top, fits like a glove and has no leaking associated with this top. Long "flying buttress styled B pillars frame a perfectly vertical rear glass and create a nice cove prior to the rear of this car. Deep dish trim rings with the center turbine hub wrapped in blackball rubber is seen on all 4 corners.

Interior
Two very well-preserved condition black vinyl buckets sit within a sea of black carpeting, which has two "Corvette" logo rubber/carpeted inset floor mats. The center console and ascending panel which works its way to the dash houses several gauges, the shift lever, and an OE Lock digital radio. Just a few missing chips of paint are seen here, but otherwise extremely clean. An armrest which doubles as a storage compartment fits snugly between the buckets. Dash is showroom with its deep inset round gauges and lights.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 350ci V8 which consigner states has been rebuilt to LT1 specs in the year 2010. This includes an L-48 camshaft, 2.02 valve heads, and a single 4-barrel carburetor. On the back is a TH400 3-speed automatic not original to this car, and a 4.11 Posi rear axle. All under this hood presents nicely with cast aluminum ribbed valve covers and a shiny Edelbrock air cleaner cover.

Undercarriage
The frame, floorpans, and rocker panels are all totally rust free, and painted nicely. A dry underside with virtually no drips, or faults can be viewed with the car on a lift. No problems to report here, just unadulterated C3 suspension on all 4 corners and power disc brakes to go along for the ride as well. A note to the shiny like new snaking exhaust working its way from front to rear.

Drive-Ability
A quick starter, all performed well on the test track with solid mechanicals. The rebuild in the engine creates a surprising amount of more power. I did notice the driveshaft clunks when this car is put into gear, and the odometer, heater, and wipers were inoperable for my drive. A new battery and starter and new shocks were just installed in April of 2020
A well enjoyed 'Vette right out of 1971 now with consigner stated LT-1 specs on the engine front, and nice exterior fiberglass and trimmings. Clean interior and a few issues to address on the in-operable front, but a good overall presentation. Come on down to Classic Auto Mall and make yourself Mille Miglia red with envy!
