It was sold new on June 20th, 1981 in Belgium to Boghemans Petrus Albertus and then imported to the U.S. on May 22, 1983, by Claude Dubois of Special Automotive Marketing International (SAMI) in Belgium to Guy Anderson of the Exotic Car Store in Smyrna, Georgia for his client in Atlanta Georgia. De Tomaso may have held a reputation for being quintessentially Italian, but it owes a lot to America and Belgium. In the 1970s it was best known for the Pantera, named after the Italian word for Panther, and it ended up remaining in production for two decades.Ford owned 81% of De Tomaso, hoping to shoehorn its American muscle into a refined Italian mould. To that end, it helped export the Pantera through its various dealerships. Claude Dubois, a famous Belgian racing driver and team owner was its representative in Belgium and as a result became a concessionaire for De Tomaso. It was he that brought this specific example to the United States to Guy Anderson. Dubois was a nine-time starter of the Le Mans 24 Hours as a driver, and a long-time member of Equipe National Belge team. After racing he went into team ownership, and Dubois's DeTomaso entry to the 1972 Le Mans 24 Hours was the only one of the Panteras entered that year which finished the gruelling endurance race.Guy Anderson, one of the first second-generation DeTomaso distributors in the U.S., sold the car new to Lamar Cheatham, who owned the car for almost three decades, up until 2009. He then sold it back to Anderson, who retained ownership of the car until his passing in 2018. The factory exterior paint for Pantera GT5 #9200 is extremely unique and oddly resembles the paint scheme from the BMW M1 of the same time period. For what ever reason, DeTomaso factory painted this GT5 white with three color bands of blue, purple and red. In 1984 Mr. Claude Dubois received documentation from DeTomaso stating this:Subject DeTomaso Car #09200.We inform you that the car mentioned in the subject with number of frame THPNZU09200, was produced by us in white color with three bands of purple, blue and red.We present to you with our best regards.De Tomaso Modena S.P.AThis GT5 still retains its factory special paint scheme, bodywork and interior, all of which remain in very good survivor condition for being all original but there are some flaws and imperfections due to age and there are bubbles at the bottom of both door skins. It features the largest disc brakes and the widest Campagnolo wheels ever fitted to a Pantera. This car has original Michelin TB5 Racing Tires, size 23 62R15 in front and Michelin TB15 tires, size 29 61R15 in back that show age. Equipped with a Holley four-barrel carburetor, its naturally aspirated 351 Cleveland V-8 delivers 345 horsepower and 333 lbs-ft of torque through a ZF five-speed manual gearbox for a factory-rated 0-60 MPH time of 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 174 MPH. This highly collectible Ford-powered exotic shows a believed-correct 79,075 kilometers (49,154 miles). While equipped with factory air conditioning, it inoperable. It is documented with copies of original import papers, original DeTomaso certificate and original signed letter from DeTomaso concerning paint scheme.Ford began importing this Italian-American hybrid in 1971, selling the Pantera through its Lincoln-Mercury showrooms through 1974, when the partners were unable to meet more demanding safety and emissions regulations. The Pantera followed the same evolutionary path as many of its supercar contemporaries, concealing the drivetrain and suspension upgrades beneath ever-swelling bodywork designed to improve aerodynamics and contain increasingly wider wheel and tire combinations. Where the first Panteras used 351 Cleveland engines rated at 330 horsepower, later models, such as the GT5, offered stronger versions rated at up to 350 horsepower that responded well to tuning and modifications such as turbocharging. While this Pantera is equipped with air conditioning it is currently inoperable.Competition to this Pantera in 1982 included Chevrolet’s Corvette, Ferrari’s 308 GTB, Lamborghini’s Countach and Porsche’s 911.VIN: 874LTHPNZU09200EIN: 07238This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 79,075 kilometers or 49,154 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt Missouri title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
