Description of 1969 Dodge Dart Custom

1969 Dodge Dart Custom. Originally a 273 automatic with a 7 ¼ rear axle. The restoration job is about 80% complete and has the many of the minor details like a new radiator and engine bay wiring harness. The car needs paint and interior work and some minor odds and ends to be a really top-notch street machine.

Engine: Rear wheel dynoed at 327 HP, o it probably makes about 430 at the crank. I have dyno results (see pictures) and flow bench numbers for the heads.

· Block: 1970 360 block bored 0.06 and honed with torque plates, nd squared decked in a BHJ fixture. Displacement is 371 ci. These early blocks are desirable because the 1970-1972 blocks used the 340 water jacket, o they can be bored to a 4.06 diameter without any concerns (a 0.02 overbore in a 340 block). New main and head bolts, opar Perforamce (MP) high volume oil pump, indage tray, affled pan, P oil pump drive with hardened tip. Compression ratio is 10.6:1 and cranking cylinder pressure ranges from 158-162 psi, o it runs well on premium pump gas.

· Rotating Assembly: Keith Black KB107 pistons with Childs and Albert file fit gapless rings, agle SIR rods, P cast steel crank with fillet rod and main journal, ughes engines supplied tri-metal rod and main bearings to match the crank journals, new MP damper, span>B&M flex plate. The rotating assembly is Internally balanced

· Valve train: MP double roller timing chain, omp Cams Extreme Energy cam with 274/286 (230/236@0.05) and .523/530 lift with 1.6:1 rocker arms. Comp Cams lifters, ughes Engines custom length pushrods, ughes Engines 1.6:1 pedestal mount aluminum rocker arms, P springs, etainers and locks.

· Heads: MP Magnum truck heads. These are new castings outfitted with the same stainless steal valves, etainers and locks that were used on the 380 HP crate motor. These have been ported to flow 255 cfm on the intakes and 176 on the exhaust side at about 0.525" lift. The chambers have a de-shrouding cut and I added the larger MP stainless 1.97 vales. The Intakes have a 5-angle valve job and the valve has a 30 degree back-cut. The exhaust valves are the stainless 1.62 and the exhaust seats are a radius cut.

· Induction: Edlebrock Performer RPM that is port matched to the heads and the casting flash has been smoothed. 625 cfm Edelbrock carb, &N filter (pictures show a demon). Carter high volume pump and 3/8' hard line (or -6AN).

· Ignition: Mallory distributor, oil and 6A control box.

· Exhaust: generic 1 5/8 headers painted with a black ceramic. 2.5 exhaust system with a cross-over tube and Flowmaster mufflers.

Transmission/driveshaft:

· Low gear 904. The low gear set gives the same effective drive ratio as if you added about 0.3 to the rear axle ratio (the final drive ratio of 3.23 rear axle is effectively increased to about a 3.50). This allows the car to launch as if it had a lower gear ratio in the rear axle without having to spin as high an rpm at highway speeds. Basically a budget overdrive

· Rebuilt with MP clutches, ands, hift kit by a Dodge mechanic (About the only part I didn't build).

· Tranny cooler, eep pan and Mancini Racing deep pickup.

· MP 166K torque converter. This converter stalls in the mid-2,000 rpm range and matches the cam well.

· B&M shifter

· Lokar kick-down linage

· Shortened and balanced driveshaft, heavy duty universal joints, eavy duty aluminum u-joint caps (Moroso if I remember correctly)

Axle:

· 8 ¾ A-body rear axle

· Cone-style Sure Grip

· New seals and tapered axle bearings.

· 5x4 lug nut spacing

Suspension:

· Mancini Racing heavy duty rear leaf springs

· KYB gas adjust shocks

· Poly graphite bushings.

· Just Suspension poly-graphite bushing rebuild kit with new tie rod ends and ball joints. Front and rear sway bars. Mancini racing gusseted lower control arms

· Kelsey-Hayes 4-piston calipers with new pistons and seals

· New master cylinder

· Manual steering

· BF Goodrich Radial TAs

Interior:

· Bucket seats and 5 point harnesses.

· Stock rear seat needs new upholstery

Body:

· The car was originally gold, ut it was repainted in lack before I bought the car.

The body is generally rust free. The driver-side rear quarter panel has some Bondo and the vinyl top is OK.
