Description of 1964 Ford Mustang

1964.5 Rare "D code" Mustang Coupe

All of the mustangs made at the beginning of production were hardtops and coupes mostly with either 6 cylinder or the base V-8 production engines. This particular Mustang is an extremely RARE Mustang as it had the most powerful engine you could get until Ford came out with the solid lifter 271HP motor which was the motor that powered the 65-67 Shelby GT350's. This more powerful engine was a 289 cu. Inch engine with a 4bbl carb. This designation of D code was only used for the 64 ½ year cars.

In 1965 they raised the compression and called it an A code engine. There are numerous items on the '64 cars that are not on any other car. The most prevalent are the mounting of the cars horns to the frame rails of the car and the fact that they are much larger than the regular Mustang horns.

This car was a very expensive car back then as it came from the factory with A/C and deluxe spinner hub caps. One of the most significant items that you notice on the body of the car are the turned down corner lip of the 64 ½ headlight bucket assembly. The front corner of most '64 hoods were also turned down to match this bevel.

The hood bumpers are also different on the '64 cars. When was the last time you saw one of these on a mustang? A very significant and very rare item to find on one of these desirable '64.5 cars is the correct size MUSTANG script that is written on each front fender. For some reason, n '64.5 the MUSTANG the letters are 4 and 3/8 inches long. However, n 65 and in 66 they were 5 inches long. Most 64.5 cars have naturally been repainted at least once in their lives and unfortunately the rare 64 script is thrown away and the wrong 65/66 put back on the fenders. To me, hat script size tells me that whoever owned this car took great care and detail to save these highly valuable MUSTANG scripts.

I have also taken pictures of the other notable '64.5 items so you can see them for yourself.

This Mustang was originally built in the Dearborn plant. Evidently it was sold originally in Fort Myers, L. The vehicle was kept by the original owner until around 2004 and then sold to another owner and then restored beginning in 2013.

Here is your chance to own a significant part of automotive history that is a well optioned and rare Mustang "D" code coupe with a fantastic body, nterior and drive train The color of this car is called Silver Smoke Grey and I believe that it must be a very rare color as I can honestly say that I have not seen any that are painted this fantastic color especially when paired with the Red interior. The interior front seats and rear seats plus the dash pad are totally refurbished. The car also had an extensive 2 year restoration, ncluding, eplacing floor pans, ear quarters and wheel arches, oof. Mechanically the car has had extensive refurbishment including, ngine overhaul, ransmission and differential overhaul, ew wiring, ew brakes, ires.

This coupe is a very nice car to drive and it is nice enough right now to be taken anywhere and enjoyed or displayed for others to admire. I do not care what kind of car show you take this Mustang to; I would be extremely surprised if there was another 1964 1/2 Coupe at the show period and certainly not one with this color and all of the options on this rare D code car.

Here are the codes found on the original door tag on the driver's side:
