Description of 1951 Ford Other Deluxe

This is a very nice driver. It gets lots of attention. Very nice appearing. Steering is tight, rakes are good, nd the car drives at 70 MPH just fine. Here are the details.

I got this car to drive. It came with the flathead 6. I live in Phoenix and I wanted to get a reasonably drivable old car to have and use as a routine driver. It is pretty much impossible to put AC on the 6 cylinder. I looked around and found a flathead 8 out of a 51. I bought it and then went through it. Cylinders were good. It needed a couple of valves to be reconditioned and the timing gears were noisy. I put new timing gears in and of course new seals. I also resurfaced the flywheel and put in a new clutch. The motor runs very nicely. I did a YouTube video of the engine swap. It is at

if you would like to watch it.

I converted the car to 12 volts and added a very nice AC unit, hich you can see in the pictures.

The car odometer has 38,060 miles on it. It is pretty hard for me to believe that a 64 year old car could have that few miles. However, he AZ title states that the odometer reading is correct. Who knows?

The interior is very nice. All of the instruments work except for the ammeter (disconnected due to the 100 AMP alternator). The radio is the correct 1951 Ford vacuum tube radio. It has been refurbished by an electronics expert and is in excellent operating condition. The cigarette lighter works, ut it is a 6 volt lighter. Would blow the fuse if you used it. Lights all work. Dash lights work and dim. Turn signals work. Horn will wake the dead. The original heater works very well. All of the original vents and controls work correctly. All windows roll up and down nicely. Even the wind-up clock works. This car looks original both inside and out.

Exterior is pretty nice. The paint looks good for a 15 year old paint job. Has some fading and some touch ups. The tires are almost new Coker White Walls. They have less than 500 miles on them.

Here is a list of the things that I have done to the car:

  • V8 Engine swap

  • 12 Volt conversion with 100 AMP alternator

  • AC

  • New Walker radiator and the Walker recommended electric fan (over $1000 for the 2)

  • Headliner

  • Carpet

  • New wheel brake cylinders all around

  • Car lowered 2 inches

  • New Coker White Walls

  • Powder coated wheels

  • New rear axle seals

  • Electric fuel pump

  • Seat Belts

The following should be noted bypotential bidders:

  • The tin going from the bottom of the rocker panel up to the frame and the rear floor supports, nder the car, ad significant rust which was repaired on the visible sides but was not addressed on the underside. Please see the photos.

  • The cooling system works fine up to 95 degrees. However, his year we have had over 100 days of above 100 degree weather in Phoenix.

  • The windows show yellowing around some of the edges. In addition, here is a small crack in the corner of the driver's door window (shown in a picture).

  • The chrome is original. It has the usual pitting, tarring and some rust. The pictures do not clearly show the defects. The worst chrome is the driver's side front turn signal housing.

  • The windshield wipers are the original vacuum driven ones. Some days they sort of work, ome days they don't.

I have tried to fairly describe the car. It is a lot of fun, ust not suited to really hot climates. If you want a Shoebox Ford to drive, his could be it.
