This 1968 Mustang coupe is a great example of a passionate owner doing all the right things. yet still offering the car for a fraction of the investment require to restore it. Thoroughly updated to be safe. reliable. and fun. it offers great Mustang looks and comfort with V8 performance and a very affordable price tag. That vivid copper paint was borrowed from a late-model Ford Edge and it's remarkable how good it looks on the Mustang's 1960s shape. The car hails from Alabama. so major rust was a non-issue. and although not perfect. the brilliant copper paint shines well. The coupe is a bit more formal than the fastback or convertible. but it offers details like the blacked-out tail panel and Shelby-style hood with locking pins to up the aggression a few notches. and a subtle de-badging and removal of some of the trim makes it look sleek and modern. Nice chrome bumpers stand out against the paint. but most of the other bright work is original and in decent shape. with the good news being that replacements for anything that doesn't measure up to your standards are inexpensive and easy to find. But the truth is. the whole car has a great all-of-a-piece look that's very appealing. The black interior also received a thorough makeover. starting with a set of black Procar buckets. Infinitely more comfortable than the stock chairs and highly adjustable. they're joined by a custom-upholstered back seat that gives the interior a highly finished look. New carpets and door panel inserts help make it look fresh inside and we rather like the industrial-strength look of the fire extinguisher strapped to the transmission tunnel. A fat Grant GT steering wheel has an additional leather wrap that's easy to grip and the entire dashboard was faced with cool engine-turned panels that recall a high-performance look from bygone days. Modern white-faced Auto Meter gauges replace the original dials and give a comprehensive view of the small block V8 up front. and knowledgeable Mustang fans will be relieved to know that the heater core has been replaced. There's lots of sound-deadening material used throughout. so it's cool and quiet. and the trunk was fitted with a flat floor that offers a much more finished look than stock. A 289 cubic inch V8 offers plenty of power for the relatively lightweight coupe and with upgrades like a Holley double-pumper. Edelbrock intake manifold. and long-tube headers. there's a bit more power on tap than you'd expect. Nicely finished in Ford Blue with finned valve covers. it doesn't break any new ground but the sound of the free-flowing exhaust system is plenty entertaining. The rebuilt engine has about 2000 miles on it. so it's only just broken-in and a giant aluminum radiator with electric fans keeps it cool on the hottest days. The C4 3-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt and feeds a rebuilt 8-inch rear end with highway-friendly 2. 79 gears inside. making this a fantastic long-range cruiser. The suspension has been serviced and fitted with new shocks all around and 14-inch aluminum wheels with 215/70/14 blackwalls give it a distinctive look. This is a very affordable Mustang with all the heavy lifting already done. It's fast. comfortable. and more reliable than any old car has a right to be.
