Description of 1970 Ford Other XL/LTD/GALAXY/CUSTOM

1970 Ford XL convertible up for auction with low reserve.
History: Original owner had it 1 year. Second owner had it from '71 to '88, nd she was an older femalenever married and no children and had a window van to drive in winter so I don't think this car saw muchsnow/salt, hough it could have seen a little. She kept it in her garage that was in poor condition that waslikely humid which likely precipitated the rust, oupled with Ford known for poor body steel back then.
I have owned it since 1988(27 years). It was like a barn findat the time and is like a barn find for you now.To get it on the road back then I replaced motor mounts, cleaned out top of heads(oil return holes) andreplaced valve cover gaskets, ew fuel line/filter, ew thermostat, ew U-Joints, ew brakelines and rebuiltbrakes though therotors and drumsare original and good with barely a lip worn at drumedge hinting of lightbraking through it's life. Oil and trans fluid changed, nd put "Motor Kote" in it back in 2005 when I sawthe inventor do the demonstration in person, nd if you don't know about Motor Kote check out any youtube video of it, t's a must have. It does not leak oil or any other fluid that I have noticed.I need to let this car go to someone that can do the restoration it needs. I have a couple others that I willalways want to get to first, his car needs to be on someones first priority. It's a nice color combination, which seemsmasculine, ut great for awoman as well. It is the original color, ut it was repainted I'mguessing in the late 70's, nd I see no evidence of body damage or fillers anywhere.
Had dual exhaust installed about 20 years ago. Historic plates went on in '95. This car had 66,500 mls onit when I got it, nd I wanted to keep mls as low as possible until I could restore it, o only drove it about50 miles per summer(car meets/some cruisin'), otal around 1,100 mls. So, know the feel of the car andit's power. It's a strong 390 with 2 bbl carb, rans is tight and shifts well, ear end is limited slip and willbrake both sides loose doing a burn out. Steering is good and front end still tight. Rear springs sit a bitlow from age(expected from originals). Top mechanism/hydraulics work-goes up and down, ut needs anew skin. The previous owner had a new top installed around 1980 due to thief cut top to get into car eventhough she didn't lock it so that wouldn't happen. That top is now bad, ut the original back 'GLASS' isintact and contrary to the top place telling me it can't be re-used I think it can and I'll explain how to thenew owner. The new aftermarket back 'real' glass don't have the same slant edge profile, o having theoriginal glass is super cool(rare)and way better than plastic. I didn't have a top installed as I wanted that to bethe last step in it's restoration, hus only driven on sunny days, op up when parked in sun so interior wouldn'tget baked. The previous owner also tended to keep top up when parked in sun, o interior vinyl is stillsupple on seat tops and dash has no cracks or splits(hard to find). Funny thing- last week I was looking forthe top motor, hich I now know is behind driver side back seat, reached into the area under the top wellto feel for the motor thinking it was in what appeared to be a black vinyl bag to protect the motor from dustand moisture, ut low and behold it was the original(?) rear top boot in it's pouch, ppears like new never used, and I don't think the previous owner/s new it was there either. So, will see if I can get a pic of it on, ut it'ssure cold out. Hidden head lights go up and down, nd if let set the covers will creep open after a monthso vacuum canisters still hold. Blinkers do not blink may need relay. Brake and parking lights work.Air conditioning system all intact as original but not charged/not working, o I removed belt from compressor27 years ago so the compressor would not be getting wear for nothing. Heater motor blows, ut I by-passedthe heater core 20 years ago because I noticed fog on inside ofwindshield, nd I didn't drive it in coldweather anyway. Radio is AM and it makes some noise but no channels come in which may be due to theantennae broken off at base. The steering wheel is a wooden Grant with Ford center, nd I have the originalas well. Dash lights and under dash lights work. The door pin switches have fallen into cavity due to rustaround the mounting holes. Needs a new windshield as is cracked across center. All side light glass is good.Windows role up and down, ut driver door window mechanism is missing a brace so is tricky to get up anddown, ut it needs a better door anyway which should have a good mechanism. Driver door has too muchrust at bottom and rusted completely around outside handle to try to save it, hough it does open and close.Passenger door has little rust lower front and is savable and opens and closes great. Interior damage isonly 3 stitching splits in driver seat area and 2-3 minor marks on side panels and the plastic dashpiecedirectly above ashtray is slightly scorched from ashtray fire 30+ years ago, nd I don't have a better onein the 4 door parts car because it's the same way, heesh. Original carpet is intact and I have not pulled itto view the floor from inside, ut pounding around the floors feel solid except front passenger side has asoft spot in middle area. Never in an accident so bumpers are straight but front one may be too rusty tore-chrome, ut rear may be a good candidate. I have another rear bumper as well. The original 'XL' trunk lockcover intact. All stainless and aluminum trim is there and great, but wheel well and rocker pieces show somecorrosion. Trunk floor is intact with a couple rust spots, ut not Swiss cheese. The spare tire is original andmaybe used once, as dual white pin stripes and has been holding air pressure for 45 years. Original jackis included but not the battery as it belongs to another of my classics. The gasgaugedoes not registerand I believe it's the sending unit in tank. Tank does not leak. Back tires are too old to hold air, nd rear ison blocks while I try to locate a couple fair tires. I have one but need to find another as one might holdair for a day. Either way, t does drive, or load up or maybe a small test drive, t is insured.
The bad: Rust, t needs sheet metal repair in many places around bottom edges. Some rocker repair.Floor passenger rear under has hole but upper inside floor good. Front passenger floor has soft areabut i don't see hole in under side floor(dual layer floors), river side floors seem fine. The under radiator brace has a rust hole, o needs replaced(I may have another one).
Frameis still solid front to back, ncluding the the junction boxes at end of the side frame rails.Fenders and quarters are very straight, o repairing them should turn out well.See all pics on ebay and 200 at the photobucket link belowfor idea of the extent of rust issues.
Will need exhaust manifold gaskets installed, ut Iwas waiting to do it when engine pulled for the resto.Exhaust manifold gasket set included.
I alsohave a 70 4 door ford Custom/Galaxy (front end verses LTD)that has some parts this XL might be ableto use, nd I will deal with newowner if any parts are wanted. Roof can be chopped off to make a customremovable hard top. Hood and grill and front bumper can be used to make it a Galaxy Convertibletemporarilyuntil better XL bumper is located, ecause the Custom'sgrill and bumper is in great shape. The gas tank had been replaced, o might be better, and sending unit might be fine. Manymiscellaneousparts could be gleaned from the 4 door car. I may consider selling the whole car, ut I plan to keep thelow miles302 and rest of thedrive train.
Sorry about long read, ut I want the description to be as complete as possible so bidders have the bestidea of what the car is and needs. If you have any questions feel free to ask, nd do so well before auctionend. Include phone# and best time to call if you wish to speak directly.
Auto is for sale locally as well, nd as such may cause auction to end early if it is sold andno longer available. If you view this listing and are close enough, nd wantto come see it during auction, ontact meso we can seta time and dayfor it. A test drive may be possible, ut with top down, n the winter, ol.
Reserve is not high, nd if auction is won, inning bidder is required to pay $500.00 down within 24hoursthrough PayPaland remainingbalancedue within 3 days via PayPal. I willallow 30 days for buyer toarrange pick up of auto, nd can assist transport comp or buyerwith auto at time of pick up. After 30 daysfrom auction end and auto not picked up/removed,I reserve right to charge $5 per day storage.Car can be driven onto a flat bed, ut I would not suggest driving it any great distance due to the old tires. If it had good tires and it was 75-80 degrees out (top down), 'd trustdriving it for hours to somewhere.

1/5/16 I took and have added 130 new photos to the photobucket XL folder. Please view all enlarged.

1/6/16 I will be taking some of the underside today and upload this evening.
Added info:I remembered when taking pic of fanpulley area, that I had replaced water pump around 15 yearsago (or 500 miles ago) and painted pulley black and new pump blue.
The belt in trunk is for the airconditioner, hich clutch works, emoved belt so compressor wouldnot wear, eeds charged and any leaks found andfixed. All of system is intact as original.
When rebuilding brakes back when, aster was replaced, ines replaced and the new lines werebent along side old lines as pattern so new lines have bends same as originals.
In a photo on trunk the vinyl item is the boot and it's storage bag. It is very cold out so I did nottry toflattenit out or install it for a pic. It should be done on hot sunny day so it will be more pliable. It appears never used.
I want to add that the interior does not smell like some convertibles do after many times being rain in or water dripping into, hat musty old boat odor of mildew. I never let it get dripped into, nd previousowner didn't either. It smells fine like an old car will or should.
Dash ashtray is rusty inside, nd back of seat ashtray is in never used condition.
Diver door opens from in and out, ut for outside you have to position handle right where it would benormally, old it firmly in place and push the thumb button. Then set it back in the hole...lol.
I wish I had 3 more original spare tires on rims, hat would be the cats meow. It has a great vintageprofile. The spare is prollyworth $200-300 to the guy trying to gather a full set.
Speaking of value. I know cars can sell for more when parted out, um of all parts sold. This is a low miles XL cont 390 auto C6 auto limited slip with Factory AC:
I will not be the one to butcher/part out thissurvivor, hough rusty and need of a frame offand the attention of a good sheet metal man and some NOS goodies, t is all there, nd topart it would remove itfrom history. It has a kind of spirit, hen driven, t feels like itwants and loves to go, ery funto drive, akes you grin, ou get looks, nd know youcan get on itand easily get awayfromthe pack of any idiot drivers around you.
I suppose any molestation is me putting dualexhauston it, ut, ith thedual exhaust withturbo mufflers it sounds good while pulling away. Has a deep rumblebut not too loud orobnoxious.
I have a NOS idler arm in box that surfaced from the home previous owner lived in.That house is behind mine, er sister lived there after PO's death in 1993. Familyfound some stuff for this car when cleaning it out and saw that I got it. Why thearm I don't know because the original seems fine. Might have been for the Ford vanshe had, ut it seems/is identical to the XL part. Goes with, s in white box on rear floor.
I have a NOS side mirror in original Ford box, dentical. I bought it in 1979 on the side fromthe guy I bought a 68 302 Fastback from. Never used it because the Fastback actuallyhad the encased type. I may sell it on the side if wanted.
I have pair of 69 Mach 1 black buckets(red stripe) since 1979 in dry storage in greatcond that I thought I might use for this XL if I were to switch to buckets for fun of itand make a custom console, r while bench out for restoration of driver seat.If I everdecideto sell them I will alert thenew owner of XL first.
As mentioned before, will give new owner first dibs on parts from the 70 Custom/Galaxy4 door. It's dash pad is perfect too. Gas tank and sending unitmay be better.Lenses? etc? I already replaced XL window crank that was missing knob and a lockpull with thebest ones form the Custom.
That's it for now, hanks for reading

1/7/16 I've added 50 photos of underside etc to Photobucket XL folder.

Info to add:Brakes~ 20+ years ago when went through the brakes I had replaced calipers, otors, flex lines and hard lines, aster, rear wheel cylinders, ear brake spring and hardware kits.Rear drums are original.I painted drums and rotors, epacked bearings etc.Today I installed new rear wheel cylinder rubber kits, led and adjusted. They had started to drip, nd I found the kits they gave me back then were for 15/16"bore instead of 1"bore. So after all this time the rubbers stiffened and let a bit offluid past. There is 2 options of bore size, nly 1/16" diff it's easy to make mistakewhen parts storesays this is what it calls for and they fit. These are the larger 1"bore option.Front pads are 95%, nd rotors are 99%, rums are 95%, hoes 95%, luid is fresh and clean.
Exhaust was custom bent, hey use a thicker tube when custom, erses off the shelf pre-bentthin stuff. Chrome tips have rusted. I chose how far they extend. I can't stand when tips stickout a mile, hey end up scraping pavement or burn a leg, ol.
I had replaced the transmission pan gasket around the same time, s I paintedthe pan same blue while it was off. Oil pan has never been removed.
Gas cap well drain hole/tube drains, ot clogged.
Might add there is nodoubt this is a 67,711 mls #'s matching auto.
I hope I provided enough photos to help you decide if this is the project for you. Most importantly is this a car you can see yourself cruising in?Gotta be a Ford lover :)
Thanks for reading, oug
