Description of 1980 Ford Mustang

CHANCE OF A LIFE TIME TO PURCHASE THE ONLY M-81 MCLAREN FORD MUSTANG PROTOTYPE
ONLY 10 OF THESE WHERE BUILT AND THIS IS THE PROTOTYPE USED BY FORD TO LAUNCH THE PROGRAM.
SERIAL NUMBER P0001 WITH 72 MILES
This special Ford Mustang was created by McLaren in 1980 for Ford’s then recently founded Special Vehicle Operations (SVO). The turbo powered 4-cylinder 2.3 liter engine produces 175 HP at 5,200 RPM. The plan was to build 250 units, however the prohibitive price tag of $25,000 limited production and only 10 were built (including the prototype), which makes it one of the rarest Mustangs in the world.
It is untouched with it’s original paint, engine, interior, tires (255/55/15 Firestone HPR tires) and brakes. The interior is equipped with Recaro LS bucket seats and the instruments are a Stewart-Warner Stage III gauges set in a custom aluminum panel dressed in black wrinkle finish. The road car had the fuel tank, fuel lines and carburetor cleaned with the only part needing to be replaced was the fuel pump, the paint and interior where professionally brought back to near perfect condition.
Both the McLaren Mustang street and race car came to light when a colleague’s brother had been contacted by a friend who worked at U.S. Trust and who had been assigned to the liquidation of Harry Charles “Chuck” Gunetti Jr’s., estate. I purchased both the road car and Serial number 001 race car from the estate in June 2015 after meeting with Mr Gunetti's care taker who confirmed both Mustangs had been locked away for over 30 years and also seeing both Mustangs first hand in there untouched state locked away.
The prototype M-81 was never offered for sale instead in 1984 it ended up on display as a prize at the Holiday Inn Casino in Las Vegas. On August 30, 1984, Mr. Gunetti Jr. won the jackpot on the slot machine at the Holiday Inn Casino and instead of taking the cash prize he opted for the 1980 Ford McLaren Mustang. He had the Mustang transported back to California where it remained with other cars he later collected.
Since being found, this Mustang has been lovingly got back on the road with the original paint still in tack. They have been driven and as stated by Autoweek in December 1980, these cars “have the handling performance to match the boast of its eye catching paint scheme.
This car also comes with the original sign listing the car as a prize in the casino, a binder full of documentation including, original Michigan title, estate documents, bill of sale, mint copy of motor trend magazine from 1980, black and white prints of the car.
