Description of 1968 Ford Galaxie XL

1968 Galaxie XL fastback, 390 4V 4 speed wide ratio top loader, ( was 302/C4 ) converted using correct Z ba, pedals, and motor mounts etc. PS, PDB, dead factory AC so has tinted glass. 390 donor car was the family 4 door that we had from day 1. Rust free NC car, but does have some rust under the original vinyl roof, lower edge of rear window. See picture. I have clean AZ sheet metal for fix. FRAME HAS -0- RUST. Body mount areas perfect. Red paint is 95% original. Some would keep original, some may want to repaint. Was nominated for best original 65 and up Galaxie at Ford Carlisle some years back. Suspension is tight, firmer springs front and rear, large aftermarket sway bars, 15x8 Billet Specialties wheels with 255/60 BFG TA's. 2.50 9" rear, so no race car, but great cruiser. Stainless Steel Brakes Corp treated calipers, sleeved master and wheel cylinders. Car has 141K miles, engine 160K with heads redone with hardened seats, at 105, and of course new timing chain set. Electric pre-luber since 1990. Pertronix ignition. Gas gauge works, new sending unit few years back. I had the AC working back in the early 90's, but slow leak somewhere. All components in place except compressor. I would go with the smooth running Sandon compressor for which there are adaptor brackets. Drives great, nice and solid. Red with black vinyl roof, burgundy bench seat interior. Small dent in center of passenger door, been there for 34+ years. I have owned for 33 years. I do have 68 blue bucket seats and 2 consoles, and black tilt column shift, that can be included for $1000, need rework.

I might (might!!) be heading to Louisville KY for 50th Street Rod gathering, can drive car down with pre-payment or large deposit. Am willing to meet you at some 125 miles for delivery.

Q1 did this car come with 9"? Yes, it is a weird special order car, a 302 with factory 3.25 9" rear, the folks had a small horse trailer. Why would they not order the 390, it certainly was a bargain!! Yet they paid extra for the XL, then the vinyl roof. Go figure.

Q2 did I use a Ford shifter?? NO, I used a Hurst shifter that is mounted to a large bracket that mounts to the transmission cross member. No shake.

Q3 what is that orange device?? A PS filter.

Q4 what does the preluber do?? It pressurizes the engine before you crank. Great device, I never understood why more are not installed. All my cars have one!!

Q5 did this car come from the south?? NC as ad says. Made in Charlotte.

Q6 what are the things on the pedals?? 1/2" thick foam pads, I have minor foot issues and feels best to wear sandals, but bare foot driving. Both pedals have the stainless steel trim rings, and the brake has the round 'disc brake' gizmo

Q7 what is the condition of the various trim pieces?? Overall, very good. When I purchased the car 33 years ago, you could still find decent trim pieces at reasonable prices. Several of the pieces were replaced to improve the overall quality.
