Description of 1968 Ford Mustang GT500KR

This particular Shelby is one of 42 Shelby, convertibles in 1968 that had a WT6066 on the fender tag. This car is one of FOUR Shelbys in 1968 to be ordered with an AM FM radio! This car still has speakers in the doors. Only the AM FM cars have speakers in the doors.

WT 6066The Yellow Shelbys

This color is referred to as "Yellow" in Shelby records. No one can argue the colorWT 6066is a special paint color. But, it is certainly different from the other five special colors. 144 of the 159 special paint cars were yellow. Yellow Shelbys were theonlycars that used black rocker panel stripes.
WT 6066 actually replaced the color Sunlit Gold (Ford code "Y"). "Why ?" Well, there were not too many fans of gold painted Shelbys at AO Smith. During the spring of 1968 someone noticed the AO Smith gold paint did not match Meutchen Ford assembly gold paint. Not really a problem, unless you have already assembled a batch of brand new gold Shelbys. Fiberglass front ends and decklids were pre-painted. AO Smith was forced to remove the fiberglass from 38 cars and repaint them to match the body shells. It was an expensive undertaking and no doubt, caused some hard feelings. So you won't see any gold GT500KRs, because Sunlit Gold was history by the time the Cobra Jet cars arrived.

In the past, world record prices have been set for convertibles and a few bright yellow GT500KRs led way. I thought now would be a good time to discuss the yellow convertibles.
I have seen many numbers associated with the bright, yellow cars. It was not until Kevin Marti obtained the rights to share the Ford database, that we knew exactly how many special paint convertibles were built. All special paint convertibles were yellow.

PAPERWORK
The unique color is actually a Ford Special Color codeWT6066. Yellow convertibles came in two sizes. Originally seven GT350s and 42 GT500KRs were built. That makes the total number of yellow convertibles49. Technically, only 48 were were actually painted yellow. One car that was intended to be yellow, was painted white by mistake at the factory. This rarity is documented with factory paperwork.

The man who purchased it new was an Audioaficionado and loved his tunes! That is whythis is one of 4 Shelbys in 68 that had the am fm option. The 428 Runs as it should. The 4 speed shifts as it should. (both the ownerand I have been mechanics for over 30 years!).
This car has dealer installed under dash air conditioning. There is documentation from 1968 that states the shelby corporationsent a 209.00 check to the Ford dealer to modify the console for the under dashac unit.
The Shelby Production number is 02848.
We have the Marty Report. The top is original and has only one small tear. We have not put the top down because wethink it might tear or crumble. The top mechanism works good. We unlatched the top and madesure the inner structure was not stuck. The original back glass is in the top. I have approx 100 pictures of the car from underneath up above and inside. This car sat in one spot in the shop where it is stored and has been started up weekly for several years. This car is a drivers dream. It handles great and goes straight down the road and when youstep on the throttle you better hold on!! Do not miss this opportunity to aquire this car and just wait, next time it sells it will be for more money. That is the nature of these things. I remember back in the 80s I tried to talk my dad into buying a Shelby GT 500. Back then my dad said. 16000 is alot of money for a gas hog like that! Oh well. Hindsite is 2020.
