Description of 1958 Ford Skyliner

The Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner is a two-door full-size car with a retractable hardtop that was produced by Ford Motor Company for the model years 1957 to 1959. In 1959 the model name changed to Ford Galaxie Skyliner very shortly after production of the 1959 models had started. The retractable roof mechanism â€“ also known as â€œHide-Away Hardtopâ€ â€“ was unique to Ford branded products, and was not offered on Continental, Lincoln, Mercury, or Edsel branded vehicles during this time period. A total of 48,394 units were built.

The Ford Skyliner Retractable was only the second car in history to be mass-produced produced with a retractable hardtop; the first to reach four and five digit mass-production numbers, and the first series produced coupÃ© convertible to feature a roof composed of more than one segment. Additionally, the trunk-lid also consisted of two pieces â€” one segment took the place where other convertibles typically had a separate lid to cover the soft-top stowage compartment. Both the folding roof and trunk-lid are power operated through an exceptionally complex system. At the time of its introduction, the Skyliner was the only true hardtop convertible in the world.

Part of the Ford Fairlane 500 range, the Skyliner had a complex mechanism which folded the front of the roof and retracted it under the rear decklid. No hydraulic mechanisms were used as in regular convertibles of the era. The Skyliner top has seven reversible electric motors (only six for 1959 models), four lift jacks, a series of relays, ten limit switches, ten solenoids, four locking mechanisms for the roof and two locking mechanisms for the trunk lid, and a total of 610 ft (185.9 m) of wiring. The large top took up vast amounts of trunk space, limiting the carâ€™s sales (however, unlike what most people believe [citation needed], the mechanism had decent reliability). Production totaled 20,766 units in 1957, declining to 14,713 in 1958 and to 12,915 in 1959. An electric clock was standard. Fuel consumption was around 14 mpgâ€‘US (17 L/100 km; 17 mpgâ€‘imp) overall. The fuel tank was placed vertically in back of the rear seat, which inadvertently added safety in rear collisions. Starting in 1958, Cruise-O-Matic was added, which provided a second â€œdriveâ€ range (â€œD2â€), allowing for an intermediate gear start.

2.We accept Certified & Cashier's Checks and Bank transfers in US Dollars only. *Also please note, those buyers who plan to send payment via bank wire, we charge an incoming wire fee of $35.

3.The deposit is due within 48 hours of end of auction.

4.The balance is due within 5 days of auction closure. If the deposit is not received within 48 hours of the close of auction or if the balance is not paid in full within 5 days following the close of auction, we reserve the right to re-list the vehicle or to sell it to the next highest bidder or another qualified buyer. This does not allow you to cancel your contract, and you are still liable for damages if you breach. The vehicle will not be released until all funds have been paid in full and have cleared our bank. The Title of vehicle will be sent to buyer after all funds have cleared our bank and theoriginalsigned/dated Purchase and Sale documents have been received back from buyer.

5.Our goal is to continue providing quality vehicles. It is important to keep in mind that the vehicles we list are pre-owned, and it is very difficult to describe every small mark on them. As a consequence there may be additional minor wear on the vehicle that is typical of the age, such as minor superficial hairline scratches, small nicks and minor abrasions that are not indicated in this description. These factors will not detract from the overall appearance and value of the vehicle. Minor items such as cigarette lighters, manuals and CD magazines may also be missing.

6.To the best of our knowledge we have indicated any mechanical problems that are present in the description above. However, we are selling the vehicle "as is", without warranty other than any existing factory warranty that may still remain. Please inquire for details. Unless the vehicle has a remaining factory warranty, all sales are "AS-IS" with no warranty stated or implied.

7.eBay may offer some type of warranty. If so, that warranty is separate and independent of Cosmopolitan Motors, LLC.

9.All bidders understand and agree to the following:

10. The State of Washington shall have exclusive jurisdiction over all disputes. Venue shall be exclusively in King County. The final contract signed between both buyer and seller shall be binding. The final signed contract and terms thereof shall govern the sale. All disputes arising out of or relating to this auction, any negotiations, the Signed agreement, or to the breach, enforcement or interpretation thereof, shall be resolved by binding arbitration in Washington, in accordance with the terms contained in the final sale agreement and under the laws of the state of Washington.
