Description of 1955 Ford Crown Victoria

1955 Ford Crown Victoria

The Crestline was introduced as the top trim level of the 1952 Ford range, above the intermediate-level Customline and base level Mainline. It was offered in Victoria, Sunliner and Country Squire versions with 2-door hardtop, 2-door convertible and 4-door station wagon body styles respectively. Crestlines were offered only with a 239ci "flathead" V8 engine.

For consignment a barn find Crown Victoria from 1955. This basket handle, swoop spear stainless window trimmed car can definitely provide plenty of bling for your restoration as a parts car, as its all there and all beautifully preserved on the chrome and brite work front. The body panels are very involved with rust through particularly on the doors, and there is plenty of surface rust on the upper surfaces. It could be an ambitious restoration project as well.

Exterior
Presenting in blue and white two tone, the paint is well aged and contains plenty of surface rust, particularly on the upper panels. The side panels are showing some invasive rust involvement on the lower sections mostly on the doors and the rear quarters. Chrome on this car has some dimpling and stainless for the basket handle and swoop spear are very nicely preserved. Window trim is all good and stainless as is glass, also in good condition. Upfront a large curved inward egg crate style grille is flanked on either side by a large round turns signal/parking light on either side. The bottom is a framing of a bumper which is showing slight delamination of the chrome. A single brimmed and chrome trimmed headlight resides atop each front quarter. These flank a large white hood with a jet ornament, and cloisonn Ford front badge. On back jet age turbine round taillights with arrow shaped top turn signal/parking lights directly above, form to the rear quarter. Blue is reserved for the roof which has surface rust, as well as below the swoop spear and belt line. White shows up on the hood, and trunk, and just above the swoop spear. All mid 1950's eye candy.

Interior
Some heavy rust is seen on the hinge area of the door panels on both sides. The door panels have suffered especially on the top rails near the front of each door. Blue and white vinyl make up the panels, and some trimming in chrome strips creates borders between the vinyl panels. Looking towards the seating it is in in good condition, obviously restored with blue tuck and roll inserts, and white bolsters and surrounds. White stitching is within the blue inserts and white piping surrounds the bolsters. A nice presentation on the seats with just a few missing stitches on the passenger insert. Fronting all this is the original dash with two tone motif. This shows with white dash front, and blue dash top. The white has surface rust, and the blue is peeling. All the gauges are there as well as fan and temp controls. An original steering wheel is making its way towards the driver and shows some wear. A nice white tight headliner is on the interior roof, and some black carpet, with areas of water damage is seen on the floors.

Drivetrain
A flip of the hood reveals an untouched, unrestored 272ci V8 topped with a single 2-barrel carburetor. A 3-speed Ford-O-Matic transmission is on back and a 3.30 rear axle is on the rear. Plenty of aging going on in here. The engine currently turns over, but does not run.

Undercarriage
Underneath of this car shows some earlier restoration with clean floorpans, and a straight mostly surface rust-free frame. There are a few areas of concern on the rockers specifically on the back of each wheel surround, and on the passenger bottom running the length of this car. A new exhaust system has been installed, and a fuel tank appears newer with a coat of black rattle can paint mostly covering it. Independent coil springs in front and leaf springs for the rear show some surface rust. Drum brakes are all around and have surface rust on the exteriors.

A barn find which could provide some much needed parts for the serious restorer, or a big project for the ambitious collector. This car has its highlights on the trim, seats, and headliner areas, but those come along with some retractions. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
