1978 Land Rover Range Rover 2 Door 4x4 (Range Rover)• Legally imported into the US last year, 2 door Range Rovers were never sold in the US • Two-owner vehicle and lovingly cared for over many years by its second owner • Refinished in Land Rover G4 Tangiers Orange less than a year ago• New custom black interior with new carpet and headliner• 3.5L all-aluminum Rover V-8 engine with 8.25:1 compression #35524509E • LT95 four-speed manual transmission and “always-on” four-wheel drive• Air-conditioning, power steering and power brakes• New Firestone tires, Old Man Emu shock absorbers• New carburetor, battery, headlights, side-light lenses and markers• Rear window defroster, wiper/washer and mudflapsLaunched as “A Car for All Reasons,” Land Rover finally hit the jackpot with its Range Rover line in 1970 and that design changed little over the ensuing decade. Lovingly maintained and taken care of by its long-time previous owner, this truck was legally imported to the USA in August 2019. The early 2 door Range Rover was never sold in the US market which stands to make this Range Rover very rare on this side of the pond!Compared to many of its contemporaries, the Range Rover looked smoother and more complete, styling-wise. Made in Land Rover’s Solihull, England factory, this example was refinished in Land Rover G4 Tangiers Orange in 2019 so the paint and trim are in obvious good overall condition. The Rover’s bodywork is straight, it has a new Propulsion brand battery, the engine bay is very tidy while the rear cargo area is in a similar state and a includes a full-size spare tire and wheel and the silver bumpers look great. This Rover features several new parts – Old Man Emu shock absorbers, carburetor, headlights, side-light lenses and marker lights. This truck rolls on new Firestone Super All-Traction ND tires, size 7.50-16LT at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on a silver alloy wheel. The tires and wheels are all in excellent condition. Under the hood is a 3.5L Rover all-aluminum V-8 engine with 8.25:1 compression #35524509E, which traces its ancestry back to General Motors’ 215 CID V-8 that debuted in the 1961 Special/Skylark. GM sold the tooling for that engine to Land Rover in 1965. Rover improved and strengthened the engine during the 1960s and produced other factory displacement variants up to 4.6L until it ceased production in 2004. Mated to this motor is a LT95 four-speed manual transmission. The Range Rover used permanent four-wheel drive and had a lever for switching ratios on the transfer box for off-road use. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning with a new compressor but does not currently engage, power steering, power brakes, sliding rear side windows, rear defroster and rear window washer/wiper (inoperable).Inside, you’ll find a new custom interior done in black, which contrasts beautifully with the exterior. There are sumptuous leather buckets in front and bench seat behind. The complementing carpet and headliner are new while the four-spoke factory steering wheel looks great and ready for a new adventure. The instrument panel and inner door cards echo the rest of the interior’s condition. There is a full array of ancillary gauges, two mounted left of the center stack with the other two on the right but the fuel gauge, speedometer/odometer are inoperable. A floor-mounted gearshift, a lever for the different ratios in the transfer case and an aftermarket AM/FM stereo with CD player that is mounted to the left of the steering wheel, complete the interior. Competition to this Range Rover in 1978 included Chevrolet’s K-5 Blazer, Dodge’s Ramcharger, Ford’s Bronco, GMC’s K-5 Jimmy, International’s Scout II, Jeep’s Cherokee and Plymouth’s Trailduster. If you’re looking for adventure and whatever comes your way, you could hardly go wrong by choosing this hard to find 2 door Range Rover.
