Highly sought after collector's car, very pampered, always garaged, a favorite because parts are still quite available and they will last forever. Very original and immaculate throughout. Virtually perfect paint. No rust. Original perfect interior with uncracked seats, dash, door panels, roof liner, carpets, etc. Mechanically excellent. A‑C is cold. runs very well, tons of power, 225 HP, no smoke, excellent oil pressure, etc. We've just checked & repaired it and given it a service. Original owner documents, including parts catalogue, manual, data cards and metal data plate. Records from '79 to '11 documenting the mileage. Soft top is brand new AM/FM/CD, power windows and antenna, tire chains, tools for top. Driven only by non- smoker. It was driven periodically until October, 2010. The original owner could drive any more, and is being sold as she recently passed. MSRP in 1979 was $31,589, which in today's dollars) is $120,000. High retail value today, which is applicable for a car in this condition, according to NADA Appraisal Guides, is $22,800 for average Retail and $35,400 for high retail. This car's engine is as healthy as can be. This is a true California car, as the pink slip shows that it was sold to the current owner in San Jose by Smythe Eupopean in San Jose, California on June 13, 1979 and we have the original sale contract and maintenance records showing it had only one owner. One of the last cars so equipped, this 450SL still carries both its vintage blue and yellow California license plates like badges of honor. These original plates irrefutably prove that the car has never been registered outside the Golden State. As you would expect from a pampered low mileage car, this Mercedes comes with a plethora of factory books and manuals. Here's a partial list: Owner's Manual, Maintenance Booklet, faithfully stamped, Service and Warranty Policy, Emissions Systems Manual, Michelin Tire Manual, Key Manual, Consumer Information, Approved Motor Oil Chart, Stereo Radio Performance Booklet, Parts Catalog "G." Better yet, this SL's service history is documented in a big folder and in the MB maintenance logs dutifully filled out for the required service on every page. The front subframe factory recall has been performed.
This roadster can be transformed into three different vehicles: With the factory steel hardtop in place, it is a luxurious fixed head Coupe, With the new soft top up, it is a leak proof convertible. Lower the soft top, hide it below the alloy cover, and you have a Roadster! The hardtop looks like new. The exterior looks excellent, befitting this low mileage California car. The paint is the original Anthracite Gray color, it needs no conditioning at all. It has the original Mercedes Benz 6.5 x 14" forged aluminum alloy wheels and the Michelin tires appear new with all of their tread. wear nice radials of the correct size 205/70 14 all around.
The car's undercarriage is in great condition. There's no damage of any kind; not an ounce of rust to be found. This California beauty has never needed any rust repair, either. It was always dry stored and covered.
The 450SL's spacious cockpit still looks excellent after all these years, features real Zebrano ("zebra") wood accents and leather upholstery. All gauges work, even the clock! The automatic climate control featuring the wonderful ON/OFF compressor switch has just been serviced and blows heat storms or ice cubes on demand. What really makes this SL stand out is its wonderfully preserved interior. The tan carpeting is original, and it has been covered with additional mats. The SL's trunk, fully upholstered in factory original tan velour, looks very nice throughout. To the left is the factory HIRSCHMANN power antenna, unique because of its two extension levels, controlled by a switch on the dashboard. To the right, behind the lid, is a compartment housing battery and jacking equipment. The spare complete with original MICHELIN tire resides below the trunk floor. Even here you won't find a speck of dirt, let alone rust. Everything is clean, clean, clean!
