- This is quite a rare car. These took Mercedes over 10 years to develop and were considered to be an absolute engineering marvel at the time and even by todays standards. There were many firsts with these cars. Only produced from 1991-1998 of which 32,517 were made total in all 8 years of production, and much fewer were imported into the US due to the fact they were well over $150K (translates to around $220K in 2020 dollars). Most were built to the specs of the original buyer and very few were identical. The 408HP 6.0L V12 engines are known to last 400K+ miles and are considered bulletproof and very reliable. 0-60 in less than 6 seconds which is very impressive even by todays standards for a 4900 lb vehicle. This one has always been in dry Southern California and was maintained with an open wallet. It was the travel car of choice of the late singer Trini Lopez who owned this car for many years. He purchased it from his friend in 2002 after going for a ride from Malibu to Palm Springs with him as he was very impressed with how powerful, quiet, and smooth the car was on road trips. Most of the miles were from road trips between Orange County, Malibu, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas. You are better off getting one of these cars that has been driven, well maintained, and broken in properly than one with super low miles that has sat for long periods of time with dried up seals. This car has no oil or fluid leaks of any kind. Mr, Lopez gave this car in 2015 to his barber of 35 years (he was known to give away many of his cars over the years) and his wife who drove the car for a few years before retiring it from daily duty in late 2017 when the suspension light came on due to a leaking strut. Car has been on Non Op with the DMV, so if you do live in CA there are no back DMV fees. I have the same barber (he has cut my hair also for over 20 years) and he has asked me to sell the car for him here on eBay due to the fact he wants it to go to a car person that appreciates this car and will do the necessary repairs to make it safely operable again. The strut can be either replaced or rebuilt. It does not seem to affect the way the car drives in my opinion, but he worried about it as the light came on on the dash. These cars are simple and easy to maintain and parts are readily available for them.
- Car runs and drives well and goes through all the gears fine with no hesitations or slippage. Every 2 weeks since it was non-opped in 2017 it has been started, let get up to operating temperature, then driven around the block a few times. Every month 3 gallons of fresh 91 octane Chevron was pumped into the tank. Sunroof works fine as do the power windows, but some of the power window switches most likely need to be taken apart and cleaned as they stick a bit. Air conditioning does get cold, but it does take a while to, so it probably will need Freon to get cold right away. Rear power sunshade works as do all other power options that I tried. All the tires hold air with no problem and there is plenty of even tread. Brakes feel solid and firm with no pulling to either side when stepped on hard. Suspension feels tight and there are no rattles or squeaks that I can hear when driving it. There is no unusual play in the steering. Engine starts right up first time, every time and there is no odd noises or any smoking out of the exhaust. All glass is in nice shape with no chips or cracks. Wood is in nice shape inside and the leather and wool carpeting is all pretty nice still for being almost 30 years old. Car could certainly use a good wash and wax and cleaning/detailing through out as is has not been detailed like it was the rest of its life before the barber got it. He did his best to keep the car covered and out of the sun with a car cover under his carport in his senior mobile home park, but the desert heat is harsh. Some paint correction and love and this car can look like new again with out a great deal of work! I'm sure many of the paint imperfections will buff out as the Mercedes paint is very excellent quality. The engine box should look liek new with a good cleaning and the trunk and interior could use a good shampoo and leather conditioning to make look and feel like new. Car has great bones and is a clean pallet to do with it what you choose. Many of these cars have brought over $20K in the past few months and they will continue to climb as time goes on. I know someone will use Buy It Now and get a great car they can enjoy and work on while it keeps appreciating in value. This car will hopefully be a fun and rewarding project for someone with the time and patience to make this car like new again.
