I spent 8 hours taking the ash tray apart and installing the stereo inside it so it would fold up into the dash so you don't even see it. I did this to maintain originality. We wouldn't want to take out that factory in dash 8 Track. I don't know about the 8 Track but the radio does work. I also added some Rockford Fosgate speakers in the dash.
I bought this convertible on 6-5-15 to replace the motorcycle I had crashed thinking I was on the road to recovery. Not being able to ride again for quite some time I still wanted to be in the wind.
Well here I am a year later and still receiving medical bills. Having been out of work for so long I must let go of the Olds.
I would consider this car a barn find in unrestored original condition. I would say this car still maintains 98% of its original parts. I bought this car in Phoenix but the very little I learned from the owner was that it had came from Florida many years ago.
When I bought this car I admit I had doubts of it being so low mileage. I have driven it about 4000 miles now and have found several clues that reinforce that it is truly a low mileage car.
The first is a 1981 sticker on the windshield that makes me believe this windshield is the original. What is interesting is that the windshield has no pitting or any other flaws. On a high mileage car the Chrome around the windshield and on the front end will show wear due to bugs and road film. This chrome is clean and is in great shape.
Of course one of the easy things to identify is wear on the brake and gas pedals. These are in great shape.
The door hinges are like new! These doors are heavy and it is common for these hinges to show wear or just to be completely shot. I removed the trim around the wheel well to straighten it on one end. Underneath the trim is usually rusted and in one of the pics as you can see it had only minor surface rust.
I pulled the spark plugs and they are still the original plugs that came in the car!
The carburetor and vacuum lines look as though they have never been touched. The heat riser coming up from the exhaust to the air breather is usually crushed and this one is in perfect shape.
Having driven this car about 4000 miles now I am very impressed with how well it handles and how smooth the ride is. The steering is very tight.
I had the oil changed in Phoenix when I bought the car. I watched the oil level at various times. It has not dropped at all and is only slightly discolored. The oil was again changed at 42310 miles.
The body is very straight with only one small ding where it looks like someone had swung a shop door into it on the back drivers quarter, Underneath the car is very clean with almost no rust as you can see in the pics. The floor pans and trunk are solid and in great shape. In the pics you can see rust discoloration in the stamping. I cleaned them and treated them with Rust Doctor.
The paint is a 25 footer, needs repainted, but is ok for a driver.
The exhaust is also still original and needs replaced. It is quiet now but I have done a temporary repair.
This a great car but will need some tinkering to be even better.
It is ready to go and will drive any where. I drove it home to Durango from Phoenix and have driven it to Denver three times to the Doctors.
