Description of 1975 Other Makes Bricklin SV1

This 1975 Gullwing Bricklin SV1. in the original color white is a rare and classic automobile. They were manufactured in New Brunswick. Canada at a rate of 5-7 vehicles per day. for approximately 17 months. June 1974-end of December 1975. It is my understanding a few have a 1976 designation. There were approximately 2854 built with approximately 1500 still in existence. (not necessarily all road worthy). Bricklin International may be a good source regarding roadworthy and restorations vehicle numbers. These cars have fiberglass panels upon which acrylic is bonded to the fiberglass by a vacuum forming process. This was advertised as being stronger than steel or fiberglass alone. The gull wing doors were updated to pneumatic. which are fully functional. Bricklins are not only still futuristic in styling but were also built as a safety vehicle. being designated SV1. Safety features. for the time. are described as having a: "bumper height body frame made of tubular box steel which. combined with a steel roll cage that surrounds the passengers. provides a greater accident protection than is found in standard auto design. Add to this a unique bumper system which recedes into the car in the event of a front or rear collision. and by so doing is capable of absorbing impacts in excess of those required by federal safety standards. The fuel tank is protected on five sides by steel partitions rather than being simply strapped to the body frame and fully exposed. " The brochure goes on to say that the gullwing doors open up and out of the way of traffic. since they open almost vertically. you can get in and out when you have less than twelve inches of clearance. The manufacturer offered no options. considering the vehicle to have the full compliment of accessories--except a cigarette lighter because it thought smoking and driving is not safe. Think how it would cringe today with text messaging. This vehicle is in very good condition. as the photos depict. The panels are straight. with all the black trim and badges. The manufacturer states; " there is no superfluous chrome trim to either rust or rip off. " The engine and transmission was rebuilt in 1992. I do not know the original mileage. although when I purchased it in 1996 the odometer showed 72. 24. and had been restored shortly before I purchased it. I drove it very little. just special occasions and it now shows 74. 67. Ebay requires that mileage be listed. but I cannot say this is the actual mileage due to the age of the vehicle. It starts right up with engine running just fine. and shifts smoothly. and there is no oil burning smoke. The interior looks great and is the original Bricklin seat material. The steering is tight for its year. The interior is in very good condition. The brake pedal travels to about an inch- to1 1/2 inches from the floor. and is normal to sit lower than the accelerator. In 1997 I put it in indoor storage. until September of this year. We are now retired and time to let some of our toys go. To prepare the vehicle for sale. I had Bob's Brickyard (renown specialist regarding Bricklins and a source for just about everything Bricklin)go over the car. to take correct the effects of time. The repair/work order list the following: Gas tank renew. replace gas sending unit. replace 3/8 gas line. fuel pump. hatch carpet. 2 wheel cylinders. 1 master cylinder. rear axle line. replace brake fluid. replace heater core. alve. hoses and clamps. replace upper and lower radiator hoses. replace 3 door switches. change oil and filter with additive. replace body moldings. rebuild the carburetor. replace the anti-freeze and some door wires. repaired the air doors. adjusted the hatch. glued the seal. bled the brakes. insulated the console. repaired right door release. This upgrade cost 1. 10. 95. The headlights open and close just fine and vacuum pump is operational. The tires are over 17 years old. and although still look good. they are old and should be replaced. I have driven the car since its refreshing and they have held air to the present. The door lock switch on the outside. sometimes does not work. I will take a look at it and see if it needs replacing. If so. Bob's have them in stock. The AC needs repair. It did not work when I purchased the car. although the compressor does turn over. It needs some additional parts. to make it functional. It has power steering and brakes. with a radio that works as well as all the gauges. The steering column is collapsible and the wheel has the tilt feature. The wheels are described as "Turbo Mag Wheels. " The dash is in very good condition. with only a few minor bubbles on the wood grain trim. The seats are not sliding in the tracks. and I will see if I can get them loosened up while the vehicle is being listed. The tinted glass is in very good condition. The car is a real head turner. garnering attention wherever it is driven. It was originally sold by Birmingham Chrysler Plymouth in Troy Michigan. I have the original window sticker showing the price of; 9. 85. 00. There is also a brochure and a Bricklin Parts manual. that appears to have come with the car because the suede like binder has the Bricklin logo imbedded in it. Some technical data: the transmission is an FMX. nbsp; rear axle ratios 3. 15:1. steering. power recirculation ball sector & gear. tire size FR60-15. 11in. . nbsp; power discs-front. 10in. drums- rear. nbsp; tread front-58. 24. rear 56. 85. nbsp; turning circle diameter 34feet-wall to wall. nbsp; wheelbase 96in. . nbsp; overall height 48. 15 in. . nbsp; overall width 67. 6in. . nbsp; curb weight 3. 70lbs. nbsp; road clearance 4. 8in. . nbsp; fuel tank capacity 21 gal. . nbsp; gasoline no lead. nbsp; ignition electronic breakerless. It was offered in Safety: red. green. suntan. white and orange. I know Bricklin enthusiast will write with more information. so I will try and pass it along. I can trace two previous owners from the paper work that came with the car. This is one of rare survivors that has paperwork with it. As an investment these cars can only go up in value. due to uniqueness. limited numbers and a chapter in automotive history of combing futuristic looks with safety. Vehicle is being SOLD AS IS.
