| Thanks for checking out our cool EMPI Sportster. These cars were the first conversions made for the venerable VW floor pan. We believe that this car was produced in 1964 at the EMPI facility in Riverside California. This car is not titled as a Volkswagen and the VIN. 064231 seems to support that this was car 231 built in 1964. We have included a vintage Motor Trend magazine detailing the "all new" idea of building a car at home from a kit. In the magazine article. the Motor trend staff tests a factory built Sportster nearly identical to the one offered here. Note that the magazine is from a year prior and that the basic Empi's shown have the Type 1 VW engine hanging way out back. Ours is the 64 long bed model with about double the cargo space. The longer bed. enhanced cargo capacity and a covered engine compartment were all made possible by using the 1600 pancake engine configuration. Just like with the squarebacks and the vans. cargo space can be useful in many ways. To be sure. the 50 year long passion of taking a reliable but boring VW bug and turning it into a fun car like a Meyers Manx or a thousand other variations. began here with the EMPI. Since then. tens of thousands of VW's have been transformed into their owners dreams of fun. A huge community exists and parts are plentiful and inexpensive. Here's what we know:It's a hoot to drive and you get a lot of waves. thumbs up and camera phones. This Empi has been extremely well cared for. At 50 years of age. she looks nearly as fresh as the day she was born. She sports a beautiful patina. no accidents or damage and excellent mechanicals. As opposed to fiberglass cars. the EMPI has no cracks or wear from stress or use. She sports an all steel body including fenders you can easily have a seat and relax on without any flex at all. The steel also contributes to rigidity and road feel. At 50 years old. she's nice and tight at 70 MPH. something fiberglass cars struggle with daily. Tires are near new. Pancake air cooled VW engine with dual EMPI carbs. EMPI valve covers and EMPI exhaust. Starts right up and has tons of power. Scat short shifter with reverse lockout. Fresh red oak stake bed panels. Chrome and glass are excellent. ZERO rust issues West Coast CarTowbar included. This makes a perfect tow behind vehicle for your motorhome.
