This early-1951 Crosley Super Sports was recently acquired by a colleague out of long-term storage in the Upstate of South Carolina. He and a friend were planning a restoration, but such plans were apparently not realistic and we acquired it recently as these hold a special place in my heart. Not only was a Super Sports the first winner of the 1950 Sebring 6 Hour, Powell Crosley's little creations were truly America's first sports car - light and relatively powerful for how small the engines were!

Benefiting from years of storage, our Super Sports is nice and straight with little evidence of body filler in its original steel bodywork. We suspect that its original color was white, the black areas would seem to be original primer and we suspect that it was repainted in red at one point. Bumpers are generally quite straight front and rear and it has the optional grille guard, though it has no grille!

The "Super" script for the right side is in the parts cache. The wheels were refinished and shod in some Yokohama 12" tires a while back. The spare wheel is in the parts cache along with the rear deck fixing bracket.

The top bows are present and generally quite straight, with mild restoration they will be ready to accept a new top!

The rear lenses are intact, we put a new old stock brake/tail/license plate lens on as the original was cracked. A full set of front and rear small lenses conveys in the parts cache detailed below.

Straight, solid and ready for a comprehensive restoration. Almost every part for a Hot Shot is available from at least one vendor. These cars are rarely seen but well-loved by a dedicated enthusiast community.

One small hole above the "Super" emblem on the driver's side will need metal repair but this is the only such area we have found. This is a mysterious hole, we suspect that someone mounted a side mirror in this location and did a lousy job of it long ago!

The windshield frame was off the car (as was much else) when we got it and we reaffixed it for effect, obviously it will need a new piece of flat glass cut as well as a new filler panel below (original cardboard-like material is actually quite good).

The headlights and bulbs appear to be original Westinghouse....

... with these "Continental Headlight Visors" fitted.

The original Crosley badge on the nose.

The spartan interior is even moreso but it's really quite good. The radio, glove compartment and its lid are in the parts cache as are the remnants of the speaker and trim bezel. The temperature, oil pressure and charging gauges work but the fuel gauge would seem not to or the wire is off. The floorpans are solid as is the rest of the underbody (detailed below).

While incorrect, the seats are serviceable and in good shape.

Very little is missing, the rear-view mirror, steering wheel center and shift knob are not with the car but are reproduced.

Engine running with good oil pressure and just starting to warm up. The charging system is not working and we haven't determined why.

The "Hot-Wave" heater under the dash is a nice accessory.

The CIBA engine runs very well, the fuel pump was recently rebuilt by our friends.

The large AC fuel filter on the left inner wheel house seems overkill but this and a large remote oil filter evidence good intentions if not perhaps some racing preparation at one time.

The rear interior trunk compartment is quite spacious and more importantly free of rust!

Moving underneath the car, we're going from behind the driver's front wheel counter-clockwise. Here is the brake master cylinder, just rebuilt.

Pans and frame rails are solid throughout.

Original brake cables and exhaust system remarkably intact. Note inner rocker panel on passenger's side, so solid!

The fuel tank has seen better days but is not leaking. The loose wire may be to the sending unit.

Differential clean and relatively dry. Note how good the underside is!

More of the same!

Sound pans and rockers as seen here.

Overall, very well preserved over all these years - she's 65 years old now, after all!

New lenses, door handles, a good script and some various other parts...

Spare wheel, new wiper arms, weatherstripping, pedal and pads and quite a bit besides... note the optional underdash ashtray!

More good spares, a cam cover, tail pipe, weatherstripping....

Treasure! The original Crosley-Motorola AM radio, speaker, bezel and the glove compartment.

Should you choose to use these, a set of floor mats that just need trimming to install.

Original right-hand door panel.

The original and quite intact roadster top.

The original Super-Sport deluxe side curtains for full weather protection, I think one of the Crosley vendors would give their eye teeth for as good a pattern set of these... maybe you'll get a discount.

A copy of the last title dated April of 1961, owner's information blurred purposefully here and below.

The present title dated February of 1999.

Please note that we are trying to find the chassis number plate that goes on the firewall, it was removed for safekeeping and you know how that goes. We'll get you a reproduction if it comes to it. It was spotted recently while with our friends ...

A fine example of a restored Super Sports, with a little time and effort, this car can look at least this fine and be worth well beyond $20,000 in today's marketplace.

PLEASE NOTE - BIDDERS WITH FEWER THAN (10) FEEDBACKS MUST CONTACT ME PRIOR TO PLACING A BID.

This car is being sold by a licensed and bonded dealer of fine used automobiles located in Augusta and Savannah, Georgia (where this Crosley is located). Please understand that this is an unusual 65 year old long-term storage car hand-built by men and not gods - and is thus sold as-is, where-is with no implied or stated warranty or guarantee; please be realistic about your expectations (i.e., if you expect a Miata, buy a Miata). As stated above in the listing, it has been made to run, drive and stop and that's about it! For the right buyer, I would even consider overseeing a quality restoration in one of our shops but this would be after the transaction has completed and we have had many conversations to this end.

Full payment is due within seven days of auction close unless discussed with us in advance of your bid. Your winning bid is a contract to buy, not just to look or for first right of refusal; the only reason your contract would be null and void is if it was found that we willingly misrepresented the car in the above description. If you feel you need to inspect the car prior to purchase, please arrange and have this inspection done prior to placing a successful bid, we welcome your visit. Accepted forms of payment include a cleared certified cheque or wire transfer in the dealership's bank account, or cash in person on pickup (no cash via the mail, eBay!). Georgia residents MUST pay sales tax to the dealership in addition to your purchase price just as you would to any other automobile dealer. We require that paperwork be completed prior to or at the time of pickup or in-person delivery by me (should you do this in person) in any case. We do not charge tax to out of state buyers as this is something you handle at the DMV or, naturally, other dealers in all 50 states.

Shipping or pickup must occur within fourteen days of auction close unless discussed with us in advance of your bid. Included delivery to Hershey by Tuesday the 4th of October requires that a deposit, if not payment in full, be received first via Paypal or other practicable means and that full payment be received in cash on delivery if wire transfer has not already been received. Should you be along the I-95 corridor between Florence, SC and Philadelphia, PA (within a 20 mile distance of I-95), the car will also be delivered to you for free during Sunday or Monday the 2nd or 3rd at which time full payment will be proffered in cash. I am happy to do this as I'm headed to Hershey anyway! Otherwise, we are happy to refer you to one of the high-quality open or enclosed collector car shipping companies that we use frequently in the normal course of business - and we cannot stress enough the importance of using such a carrier and not a random open transport broker or carrier you might find online, particularly as this is an unusual older and delicate car. For international buyers, we can carry the car to the port of Savannah at no charge or to other ports for a nominal fee, though shipping beyond the U.S. border must be entirely arranged for and paid by you. Please contact us if you need any assistance with logistics and we'll be happy to help.

We reserve the right to cancel all bids and end the auction early at any time during the course of the sale should a sale occur outside of eBay as the car has been offered quietly through other channels over the past week or so. In this event, only when full payment has been received from such a buyer will the listing be pulled.

Any legal action associated with this sale from either the buyer or the seller is to take place in the State of Georgia in the Chatham County Courthouse. The bidder/buyer further agrees that any legal action will be heard in Chatham County in the State of Georgia. All legal actions associated with this auction/sale will be governed by the laws of the State of Georgia and buyer agrees to be responsible for all legal costs including, but not limited to, court costs, expenses, attorney fees, cost of process service, and all other costs associated with the normal course of business.
