Description of 1959 Other Makes

1959 Brockway 257-T

For 65 years Cortland, New York was the home of Brockway, one of the 20th Century's best known manufacturers of heavy duty class 3, 4 and 5 motor trucks. If you grew up in New York State, chances are your town or municipality owned a number of Brockways, which were the chassis of choice for snow removal and road maintenance work. Many town's fleets were exclusively Brockway, and the brand continues to enjoy a rabid fan base a good 40 years after the last Brockway rolled out of its Central Ave. factory.

For consignment a Brockway tractor for the big wheel man who wants to haul in classic style. Good power from the gas engine, and air brakes as well as a 2 speed Eaton Rear allow you to cruise easily at highway speeds. Nicely restored and a solid frame are just two of the many attributes of this large trailer hauler.

Exterior
WIth its high up day cab fronted by a massive radiator and black grille, cowled hood it is all go with maroon paint. Exterior steel panels are good, and slight misalignment of gaps are noted on the doors. Large black painted fenders have the turn signals, and rear-view supplemental mirrors on the very edge of the front fenders. These fenders also house and integrated headlight and have a shiny diamond plate topping for easy access under the hood. Large black structural steel makes up the frame, and on the rear of the frame bed is a fifth wheel style trailer coupling. Dual spider hubbed wheels are on back and single spiders up front, are all painted and restored nicely.

Interior
Utilitarian and all functional interior with dual vinyl covered bucket seats, rubber flooring and all metal lined interior. The dash has centrally located gauges and knobs and we can note an interior heater. A large original steering wheel fronts the dash. Some surface rust is noted around the rubber floor mats.

Drivetrain
A large 572ci Continental gas engine topped with a single 2-barrel carburetor and a Fuller 5-speed manual transmission on back that has overdrive. A 2-speed Eaton air shifted range changer rear allows for and slow power or highway cruising.

Undercarriage
As this truck will not go on our lift, a visual inspection shows a fully restored, ready to roll. Frame is very solid, and all the undercarriage is painted black.

Drive-Ability
A steep climb in and some cranking but the gasser came to life. We had to allow a warmup time for the recently rebuilt air compressor to build up some pressure for the brakes, Eaton rear, and wipers. We got her up to pressure and trudged off for our test pad where it shifted nicely and drove like a truck! Great old air brake sound from the brakes relieving themselves of pressure.

A neat restoration of an iconic fleet manufacturer truck. Bathed in maroon and black, it's all working and fairly straight, ready to pull 2 pups down the A roads, grab your lot lizard put the hammer down, then get back on the blacktop.
