Dubbed the "Aero Warrior. and known to be one of the most storied muscle cars of all time. the 1970 Superbird was designed to race in NASCAR. however series rules dictated that the automaker produce at least one car for every two dealer franchises to qualify a particular model for racing. Based on a modified Road Runner two-door coupe. the Superbird is best known for its high rear spoiler and extra-long nose. which added 19 extra inches of length to the front of the car in an effort to be more streamlined and aerodynamic. Having the headlights faired into the body further reduced wind-drag. Plymouth won the Daytona 500 with Peter Hamilton driving a Superbird in 1970. and Richard Petty's Superbird became one of the most recognizable race cars in history. Despite NASCAR's discontinuation of high-powered aerodynamic designs in 1971. the Superbird still remains legendary due to its success. Production Superbirds sold new for $4. 98. or about $1. 00 more than other muscle cars. Purchasers could select from three engines: a basic Super Commando 440cid and 375hp. a 440-cid "Six Pack" engine with 390hp. or the 426cid Hemi V-8 with 425hp. Transmission options included a four-speed manual. or a three- speed automatic.
