Description of 1938 Plymouth Deluxe Coupe

1938 Plymouth Deluxe Coupe

Chrysler needed the "perfect car with the perfect name." That name was to be "Plymouth." Named after Plymouth Rock, that great American symbol, right? Well, not quite. Behind the "official line" is a story that surfaced years later. It is about what really happened behind those closed boardroom doors. "What we want," Chrysler had said, "is a popular name, something people will recognize instantly." In that room was Joe Frazer, later to become president of Graham Motors and still later to join Henry Kaiser in a post-war automotive venture. "Well, boss," replied Frazer, "why not call it Plymouth? That's a good old American name." " Every farmer uses Plymouth Binder Twine," he said, "let's give them a name they're familiar with!" And so, the name was Plymouth. The Mayflower ship on its radiator suggested the rock and the Pilgrims, but if it wasn't for the binder twine, there would never have been a car named Plymouth.

For consignment a 1938 Plymouth Deluxe. This car is a true barn find, with rust, dents and dings, mohair interior, and unrestored condition. Perhaps a parts car or utilize the car for a good old hot rod. Virtually a new sheet of paper to draw whatever you want and make it truly yours.

Exterior
All steel panels are adorning the exterior and all are showing paint dulling, surface rust, dents, and invasive rust. Running boards are in poor condition having seen the most of the invasive rust. Seams between fenders and body are rusted out, as are all the chrome trimmings which show rust and dimpling.

Interior
Coffee colored mohair covers the door panels and is dry rotted with holes. Original handles are still there. A long split bench is the seating installed, and this is covered with mohair which is well worn. It also has the remains of a seat cover on most of it. The original dash has surface rust and is inspired by the art deco styling. The panel in front of the original steering wheel has dislodged itself from the dash. Floors are rubber matted, and in lieu of a rear seat, there is a covered storage area.

Drivetrain
An unrestored and heavily rusted 201.3ci L head inline 6-cylinder is under the hood. This has a 1-barrel carburetor attached to the top, and a 3-speed manual transmission on the back, with a 3.73 rear axle.

Undercarriage
Heavy surface rust is on all underside surfaces. Several under the running board repairs have been patched on, and there are areas of guards being rotted off due to rust. The exhaust system is missing, and on the leaf spring suspension is heavy rust.

Drive-Ability
This car currently does not crank or turn.

A barn find, open to your imagination or for parts on a current project. Plymouth from 1938.
