Porsche's 912 is our favorite 1960s sports car. It's extremely well-built and reliable, nd it looks just like its sibling, he super-expensive 911S. Sipping fuel at a rate of 28mpg makes it extra thrifty, nd it has proven to be a very good investment, oo, ith values for superb, ust free examples appreciating at a brisk pace.

Still very affordable compared to the 911, bout 30,000 Porsche 912s were built from April 1965 until 1969. Forty-six years after production ended, nly a small percentage of 912s have survived. Today, ny well-preserved 912, specially a dry specimen originating from California, s a highly sought after collector's item.

The 1968 Porsche 912 Coupe presented here, IN *12804621*, as sold new in San Jose, alif. and lived in the city of Mountain View with its first, ady owner for 32 years, roudly displaying its 1968 California black-and-yellow license plate # XAM265. Later, he car found its way to Ft. Wayne, ndiana until being repatriated to the Golden State recently.

This fine 912 is accompanied by its original, erlot-colored leatherette pouch containing driver's handbook, missions booklet and a seldom-seen accessories catalogue. Who knew you could order a rear-window wiper for your Porsche, ack in 1968?
Exactly 67 invoices for maintenance and parts purchases are present. They document the car's mileage, hich today stands at 88,814, s well as its service history throughout the past three decades. Filed chronologically in two neat 3-ring binders, hese receipts total $24,224.49.
Apart from routine maintenance and consumables, e learn that the 912 received -- among other, esser items -- a valve job, ew piston rings, fresh set of carburetors, thorough brake system rebuild, new clutch, ressure plate, tarter, enerator and regulator.

More good news: trunk light works, actory spare wheel has vintage Michelin tire, attery still carries the factory cover. Tire jack is included as well.

Undercarriage is spotless. Rust free and unmolested, ith original longitudinals and floor pans. This is how you want to see 'em! Almost half a Century after these 912s were manufactured with little to no regard to rustproofing, inding an exceptionally-preserved, ompletely dry specimen is an uncommon occurrence, ndeed.

The Coupe's accident free coachwork impresses with perfect body gaps and shut lines. Indicating paint code #6803 on the metal tag in the door jamb ("Ossi Blue," a very rare and desirable color), he car was carefully resprayed once, bout 30 years ago, n its present, olo Red hue. The finish, hough vintage and not entirely without blems, s still highly glossy, mooth, nd displays a fine patina only time can create.

By far the most desirable option for any Porsche 912 are original Fuchs light alloy wheels, hich now sell for about $4K, f you could find a set. These are in splendid condition and shod with German Continental radial tires all around.

It's impossible to improve upon perfection, hus our 912's cockpit has been kept bone stock, own to the beautifully preserved, riginal steering wheel and German Blaupunkt AM/FM radio.

A rarely seen option in an early 912 are sport seats. These RECAROs feature black-and-white houndstooth (German: "Pepita") fabric inserts and look phenomenal.

Rear compartment has remained in immaculate condition. We doubt that those seats have been used much, f ever. Notice the rear "automatic" safety belts.

All of the German velour carpeting is new. Prior to its installation, he car's original, ust free floors were carefully sanded, rofessionally repainted, nd Dynamat insulation was used to diminish heat and road noise.

Porsche 912's Motorraum is toothbrush clean. The 1.6-liter four produces 95 honest horsepower, ore than sufficient for spirited backcountry drives. Simplicity in its most essential and satisfying state!

We've had Jason, wner of local Ventura Porsche specialty shop RS Enterprises, o a PPI and take care of any and all issues found. He replaced the clutch, nstalled an new mainshaft seal, djusted the carburetors and installed a new generator and voltage regulator.
Note the excellent compression readings.

Monday, ovember 2, as a sunny and warm autumn day here in Ventura, o we hopped in oour 912 and went for a drive-and-photo-session.

Piloting the 912 brings back memories of the 356SC. Sound and performance are very similar. Of course, he 912 offers vastly improved driver ergonomics and, ia its lower center of gravity, ransmits a feeling of utter safety. Weighing about 250 lbs. less than the early, 30hp 911 and possessing a fresh, trong, erformance-tuned engine, his 912 compares very favorably.

Equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes and the (optional) 5-speed manual transmission, he 912 is fully able to handle modern-day traffic, ne of the main reasons it gets our vote as "favorite vintage sports car."
