By the end of 1964, Porsche was moving full steam ahead on their new 900 series (911) sports car. The 356 production was winding down. In 1965, they only built 1,100 coupes worldwide. This Porsche 356 was built on February 25th, 1965. Not many coupes were built after this date. In fact, this is one of the last to be built.

Although we do not know the original life of the car, sometime in the 1980’s, the car ended up with Madden & Ryan Body Works of Radnor, PA. They are a very well respected shop and acquired the car as payment on an outstanding mechanical debt. Patrick Ryan (partner) was a well-known mechanic/fabricator who used the English wheel and other classic techniques in his restoration business. At his leisure, he restored this Porsche for himself. Although the color combination of Slate Gray/Red is wildly popular today and highly sought after, at that time, red was all the rage. So, he restored the car to Signal Red on Tan. This was a correct 356-color combination. He finished the car in the early 1990’s and unfortunately, past away in 1994. His son then decided to sell it.

The current owner had been consumed with owning a 356 ever since his parents gave him a 356 toy with a battery motor and ignition key. Finally, after achieving some financial success in the early 90’s, he began his search for a real one. He just happened to be walking by a gas station and saw Ryan’s car being fueled by his son. He told the son how much he admired the car and Ryan’s son said, “You’re in luck…it’s for sale.” So, the current owner bought it on the spot.

Upon purchasing this 356, the current owner immediately replaced the carburetors with Webers (original Zenith carbs are included), installed new chrome road wheels/caps, new headlamps, and cored out the muffler (for better sound). He also installed a Nardi wood steering wheel, however the original Bakelite wheel with horn button is included with the car.

For the next 22-years, the current owner only used the car for light weekend cruising. He put about 5k-miles total on the car over that time. He showed the car at many local events and won awards multiple times. His state requires an annual mechanical inspection, which the car always passes. He only uses the car during fair weather and the rest of the time it stays in a heated garage on a trickle charger.

Most of the services over the past couple decades were normal items such as brake flushes, new fuel pump, batteries, and annual oil services. In fact, over the past 22-years, only two mechanics have worked on this car. It always saw a local mechanic at least once a year. Recent/significant services include:

Replace one carburetor/service other (within last 100-miles)

New 6V fuel pump (within last 50-miles)

Major service including spark plugs (within last 200-miles)

In total, the current owner has invested over $7,000 on routine maintenance in the last few hundred miles.

As a result, this 356 really drives great. Even after sitting, it fires up easily and idles smoothly. The power is strong with excellent throttle response. The disc brakes have a great feel with no fading. And, the gearbox shifts easily with no grinding or clutch slippage. This coupe would make the perfect driver for vintage events, local shows, or even daily use.

Although the owner was fastidious about maintenance, we had our local Porsche specialist do an inspection and compression test. The results of the compression test were very good:

They also inspected the chassis (see pics) and determined that the car was a nice driver that had been well cared for. They did note that although the floor is original, there were signs of repairs. The floor area by the passenger and driver foot well has been patched. The front was probably hit at one time (more than 20-years ago) and repaired. The body metal appears to be original and in good shape however, the beam was possibly replaced, as there are signs of metal work. Furthermore, there is oil leaking from the torsion tube. There also looks as if there might have been some very light rust repair in the front passenger rocker area. The repairs were done nicely for the time and have held up well over the past 2-decades. Unless you are planning on competing at a full-concours level, the car is safe and would be very respectable at any Porsche event. The rest of the car appears to be in very good condition and certainly ready for normal use.

The exterior of this coupe looks fantastic and certainly a testament to its proper care. The quality of the paint is excellent and has a wonderful deep shine (appears to be single stage). There are minimal signs of use considering it hasn’t been driven too much. The bright work and deco trim look great with just some minor nicks on the rear of the passenger side rocker deco (see pic). The chrome wheels look near perfect and are wearing Michelin tires with near full tread. The interior looks equally as nice and has a wonderful warm aged quality/patina to it. The leather is soft with no tears or rips. The headliner, door panels, and carpet look quite nice and are free of tears. The whole interior has a gently warn look that is very inviting and comfortable. All the gauges operate properly except the clock. All the lights (interior and exterior) function as they should.

This Porsche includes extra keys, owner’s manual, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, spare tire/wheel, jack, trickle charger (hard wired), car cover, tool kit cover (just a couple tools inside-see pic), original carburetors, original airboxes, original Bosch distributor, and original steering wheel/horn button.
