Cylinder heads measured and matched for height 6. Intake and exhaust valves lapped in and leak checked after 3 angle seat grinding 7. Valve springs rate checked and matched balance 8. Fuel injectors flow tested, cleaned and balanced Prior to buying this car I did my diligence on the engine builder Auto Sportsystems Group. They are widely viewed on the east coast as the best or one of the best Porsche only shops / engine builders in the region. I called SSF a national wholesale parts distributor I happen to know and they told me the shop is among the best 5 shops for Porsche in the country. I spoke several times to the shop owner and found him friendly, forthcoming and willing to answer any questions. Even after he had my money. I’m sure he would make himself available to the next owner if needed. The engine rebuild service ticket is a whopping 9 pages long. Why $31,500 to rebuild an engine. Because it was more than just the engine that got rebuilt. Throttle body redone, new fuel injection system with new injectors, fuel supply system hoses, new fuel pressure regulator, new cyl head temp sensor, new O2 sensor, and crank spd/ref. sender. Ignition Distributor serviced and new wires and hoses. Power steering pump serviced. New clutch kit, fork and pilot bearing and the clutch cross shaft and pull bearings serviced. New differential and diff slave cylinders and seals. Clutch slave cyl was also replaced. Heater hose and engine sound pad and surround seal replaced. Engine out chassis service including fuel/oil filters. New battery and ground cables. Fender liners pulled to replace oil cooler with new unit. At this time hood shocks replaced and brakes serviced. All this adds up to peace of mind. Often an engine gets rebuilt at great expense but all the engine systems are ignored since they are working OK and if redone it drives up the cost to large levels. In this case not only did the engine get a very high level race quality balanced rebuild but the systems mentioned above got thorough and expensive attention as well. This makes repairs going forward much less likely than the average Porsche. Tires are new Top newer and in great shape The wheels were refinished by PorscheWheelServices com ( FuchsRestoration com ) The painted center caps were not refinished Paint is in nice condition and fairly recently done Top goes up and down as it should Dash is in nice condition with no cracks The gauges were pulled and checked for any issues and cosmetically restored You can see a photo of all warning lights lit upon key turn on. Once started there are no warning lights lit This cars starts runs drives shifts brakes beautifully I didn’t think you could tell the difference between a ordinary engine and one that has been rebuilt with the working parts balanced down to .001, but in fact you can tell the difference in smoothness especially under load. I bought this car just to get my hands on the drivetrain for an RSR backdate hot rod I’m building. My plan was to buy the car for the engine and remove it for my RSR and sell the roller. Once the car showed up and I saw how nice it was I couldn’t bare to break up the car. These are quality automobiles that were hand-built to exceptionally high standards, before Porsche started taking lessons from Toyota on automation and cost-maximization through use of cheaper materials. IMHO, 964s are the best of all series of 911s, with their powerful 3.6 liter engines, coil spring suspension, smooth shifting G50 transmission, functional air conditioning, ABS and, of course, the classic 911 shape. It is increasingly becoming the majority view that 964s are actually more desirable than the next generation 911 (the 993) due to the classic 911 shape and more “manual” feel. Note that Singer constructs their $550k+ 911 backdate machines using the 964 (not the 993) as the base. There is really no competition with 3.2 Carreras and SCs, with their smaller engines, relatively balky 915 transmissions (in the case of SCs and early 3.2 Carreras), torsion bar suspension, aesthetically challenged impact bumpers (IMHO). Impact bumper 911s are fun toys for weekend blasts through the mountains, but 964s are modern sports cars that can actually be used as daily drivers.
