Description of 1973 Porsche 914 1.7L Targa

**Please contact us for a link to our complete photo set and all included documentation. **The Porsche 914 is the ugly younger brother to the 911 and many disputes its credibility of even being a Porsche. Granted, its entire make-up very heavily influenced by Volkswagen but then again, so is the 911. The creation of the 914 was dual purpose introduced in 1969 to serve as a replacement or alternative to the 912 and Karmann Ghia. In order to make it “sporty” they removed the roof making... it a Targa, moved the engine to the middle the car, designed some boxy fenders, and thus the infamous 914 was born! The example for sale is a 1972 Porsche (or Volkswagen) 914 chassis number 877-582-7218, with about 40,000 miles on the odometer. Whether those miles are original or not cannot be confirmed. This is a very complete, original, and structurally sounds example that is the ideal candidate to commence a comprehensive restoration. The exterior of this 914 does need some tending to. The paint is pretty well gone and the trim/chrome needs to be refinished. All the metal is solid having developed light surface rust where the paint has failed in certain areas. However, there is no extensive rust that would warrant cutting out and welding in fresh metal. This example is also extremely complete, possessing all of its trim pieces both on the exterior and interior. The metal itself will requiring some sorting as there are a fair amount of dings scattered throughout the body. The hood will require the most amount of attention as there is a significant dent at the base of it. The rubber seals will all need to be replaced as the majority of them are dry rotted. An inspection of the interior and one will be pleasantly surprised. The seats are in excellent condition and appear that they have already been reupholstered at some point. There are no knobs or components missing, systems and finishes just need to be comprehensively gone through to bring them up to par.Mechanically, this example does run and drive but would certainly benefit from a proper servicing. The engine leaks a noticeable amount of oil when the car sits for extended periods of time and from our inspection, it needs to be resealed. The gearbox operates well, the sychros still functioning properly, and shifting gear without issue. The clutch, brakes, and steering operate as they should. In summation, this 914 is a prime candidate to execute a simple and comprehensive restoration that will yield a beautiful example to enjoy. Or, if one is unbothered by the cosmetics, a throughout mechanically sorting would leave you with an interest “rat rod” Porsche 914. Included with this sale is a variety of seals, weather stripping, spare wheel, and jack.
