The 914 program was initially intended to be a joint program between Volkswagen and Porsche. Unfortunately, VW pulled out and Porsche took over the project. Ferry Porsche intended the 914 to attract younger drivers. With the discontinuation of the 914-6 program, the 2.0L 4-cylinder was the replacement. It weighed less and made just a bit less horsepower than the U.S. 6-cylinder models. Plus, the flat type-4 had a lower center of gravity helping with handling.

This Porsche was built in October of 1974 and sold new by Don Burns Prestige Porsche + Audi, LTD of Garden Grove, California on August 12th, 1975 to a Ms. Donna Lindeman of Placentia, CA. Ms. Lindeman was a local Orange County teacher. She kept the car garaged at home and always covered when at school. It was serviced regularly as it was also here daily driver. She sold the car on July 15th, 1994 with 82,356 miles to another local Orange County couple who were looking for a fun weekend cruiser.

For the past 24-years/4k-miles, these owners cherished this 914 and did a great job of preserving it. Although they didn't drive it much, they did use it regularly for local PCA shows. Also, they were fastidious about maintaining it. The owner did a lot of repairs himself as well as using some of the top local shops. Highlights of their maintenance also included an engine rebuild and the following:

Regular oil services

Reseal intake manifolds

Service fuel injection system

Replace head and oil pressure sensors and throttle switch

Rebuilt Bosch alternator

Reseal transmission and engine

New fuel lines

Replace brake pads

The owner had the motor rebuilt on September 10th, 2003 at 85,734 miles. The build included:

Engine completely disassembled

Case and heads machined by RIMCO

Crank, pistons, and cylinders cleaned

New rings and guides

Valve job

Hydraulic lifters and camshaft

Air and fuel filters

New clutch kit

New brake hoses

Rebuilt master cylinder

New Bursch exhaust

Within the last year/500-miles, the owners took the car to Aase Motors in Fullerton, California. Aase is one of the top and most respected air-cooled specialists in SoCal. They went through the car and performed the following minor services:

Repair all lights, turn signals, wipers, and dash lights

Replace shifter

Replace points, condenser, repair distributor, and set timing

Replace throttle cable and pedal

Adjust brakes

Sent tachometer to North Hollywood Speedo for repair

Repair horn

Drain gas tank, reroute fuel lines, and reset mixture

Replace alternator pivot bolt and fan belt

This 914 is in remarkable original and preserved condition. Rarely do you see these survive the test of time. It is certainly proof on how well the two local owners cared for this particular Porsche. The rare Nepal Orange paint is nearly all original with just some light paintwork on the hood (verified with a paint meter - see pics). The pinstriping was hand painted when new at the Porsche dealer. This was very typical of SoCal Porsche dealers. There are some minor chips here and there from 43-years of use, but they have all been professionally touched up (see pics). The car was original delivered with the base VW steel wheels, but the first owner upgraded them to factory Fuchs, which the dealer polished and painted. They are wearing older Pirelli P700 tires and should be replaced soon. The brakes have over half-life remaining. The glass is in great shape and mostly original. The windshield was replaced decades ago and has an older large chip that has been filled (see pic). The original owner also added the Porsche reflector between the taillights and a Porsche crest hood badge, which were very common period upgrades. All the exterior lights work properly and the lenses are also original. The front turn signals show some light checking (see pics). The removable top is original and unrestored as well. There are a couple spots where the finish has rubbed off (see pics). The seals are in great shape however.

The trunk areas, chassis, and engine bay are all very dry and wearing their original paint with no signs of repairs or rust damage. The battery tray is clean as is the "hell-hole.” The floors and rockers look excellent.

The interior is equally as nice and original. The seats are in very good condition with one small wear spot on the driver exit bolster. The carpet looks great with no stains. The door panels are straight with no warping. The felt headliner is showing a few loose spots. The dash has a couple small cracks, but is original. All the gauges operate properly as does the aftermarket radio. Rare NOS speaker covers were sourced and installed. The driver door-stay is broken (see pic).

This 914 2.0L drives fantastic. It starts easily and holds an even idle. Once warmed up, the power is surprising. It is much faster than you would expect. The 901-dogleg gearbox shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping. The brakes have nice bite and although unassisted, do a good job of scrubbing speed. The steering is tight and nimble. Some fresh rubber would really go a long way in making this an incredible canyon carver.

This would be the perfect vintage Porsche to enjoy on vintage tours, around town, or your local PCA event.

California registration is paid through April of 2018

This 914 comes with an extra key, the original maintenance/owner's manual, records dating back over 20-years, original spare, and jack.
