Description of 1962 Studebaker Hawk 1962 (GT) Gran Turismo

This car will need to be picked up on site or transportation arranged by the buyer. Payment must be by cash or cashiers check (if cashiers check, it will need to clear the owners bank before the car will be release for transport and the title signed over.)No Warrantyexpress or implies the car is being sold "as is as shown".Why you might ask? Because past experiencehas taught us that after the buyer takes possessionthe seller loses control of what actions a buyer might do. Further, these are very old cars and no one can predict the next part failure. Buyer should inspect the car prior to making a commitment or at least have someone he or she trusts to do an inspection for them.
If you are going to make an offer please don't attempt to low ball the owner. We recognizeyou want to buy the car at the least dollar, but we also are trying to get a fair price. Later offers will get the most attention, but all offers will be considered and we will make every attempt to keep anyone making an offer informed.Using the Krause's numerical rating system!No.1: = Excellent (not this car) No.2: = Fine (not this car)No.3: = Very Good - A vehicle that shows a good bit of wear, yet still operable. The vehicle is presentable for an amateur restoration though it wouldn't quite meet professional standards.I am listing this car for a member of our local (Rock River Valley Chapter) of the Studebaker Drivers Club. I thought the above and below rating system might help describe the car. My honest opinion is that the car falls somewhere between No. 3 & No. 4.I left out the descriptions for No. 1, No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 as they don't seem to apply. The owner purchased the car, maybe 12or 13 years ago and it then did a complete frame on restoration. Any rotted or damaged sheet metal was replaced and the car was painted. The front seats were recovered and several new badges were purchased. Limited resources precluded a professional restoration and the amateur restoration can best be described as "Let just get her good enough to drive and look fine at 15 yards".I examined the car recently and shot the photographs you see. The frame seems solid with just the normal surface rust (I could not get the car on a hoist, so was unable to perform an exacting examination of the frame). The "Bat Wing" front cross member on both sides outside the frame need some repair. This crossmember (same on all 1954 to 1964 C & K cars) has a flat steel plate welded to the underside portions that extent outside the frame on each side to support the "A" pillar. This flat steel plate has separated from the upper stamping. It does not effect the drive ability of the car or the safety of the car, but should be repaired before a problem develops with the front doors. I pounded on the hog troughs, full length both sides and found them to be solid. However even though there was currently no rust through on the outer rocker panels, several places seemed soft and I would expect problems to develop in these areas soon. Several minor body repairs have been make over the years and then repainted with overspray occurring, see a typical example in the hood repair photo.I was actually on a one day tour with the owner when the original 289V8 came apart (all domestic GT Hawk came standard with 289 V8's and 4barrel carburetors). The car currently has an owner rebuilt 259cubic inch engine, serial number V555187, which surely came out of a1962 Lark. All new rod and main bearing inserts were used along with new rings and the valves were reground. The engine starts right up and purrs like a cat. The duel exhaust seems solid and has a great mellow sound.Be sure to examine the photo's which will tell you a lot about this car. It's a solid driver, has modified disk brakes on the front, stops well, and runs smoothly. The price is right and it could be driven to car show and or on a Studebaker tour as is. It is also solid enough to be a good candidate for a complete restoration.I included the descriptions for No. 3 & No. 4 cars above and below as a point of reference. The description is the best I could do and as honest as I can be. However, condition is very subjective, what I see you may not agree with, so it would be best if you or someone you know would inspect the car. Feel free to phone me at 815 985-2366 if you require additional information. Else you can contact me through eBay.No.4: = Good - A vehicle that can still be driven though it likely needs minor work (such as a brake job). The vehicle is likely a poor amateur restoration or a restoration that has deteriorated over time. The car is still usable 'as is' but it certainly needs work.No.5: Restorable (Not this car)No.6: Parts Car (Not this car)
