Description of 1971 Volkswagen Type III

This listing is for a 1971 Volkswagen Fastback 1600 Automatic in beautiful L12D Shantung Yellow

VIN: 3112151944

Overall: This 1971 Fastback (U.S. market) is a great base car and the perfect candidate for whichever direction you decided to take it. This solid California car has no signs of previous major accident damage, it still wears about 70% of its original paint, and it’s dry with no apparent major rust. Clean California title and still has its original blue California license plates. Registration is not current. It has not seen the road since 19__. It is 95% complete, features all original parts, and is ready to be revived.

For many cars out there, a complete restoration is the only option. However, a car in this condition offers the rare opportunity to choose the best path to suit your needs and budget. Whether you decide on a total restoration, a preservation, or just decide to put it back on the road after a total service revival, all options are on the table with this amazingly complete, unmolested time capsule.

Exterior: As previously mentioned, this amazing Fastback still wears most of its original paint. There are a few areas on the rear quarter panels, around the rear window, and on the passenger side that have been repainted. What’s under the repaint is unknown. It’s not lost its curb appeal since the previous owner tried to match the color, but it should be pointed out and refinished properly. There are no visual signs of any major accidents or repairs. Aside from a few dents here, the body is pretty straight and the body gaps are nice. The right rear fender contains a majority of the dents located on the body. Doors and hoods open and close as they should. This is a nice solid California car with very minor rust. It does not have the typical upper front fender rust or the lower front fender rust. There are a few spots on the lower driver’s side front fender but nothing major. There is also a spot on the rear drivers side above the rear fender. All of these areas have been photographed and are included via a link to many more pictures. The rockers are solid; nice and dry. All exterior trim, headlights, turn signals, & tail lights are present. The front and rear aprons show no real sign of accident damage and are nice and straight. The inner front fenders are also nice and straight. The bumpers are complete with the impact strip. The window seals are original (dry) and retain their factory aluminum trim.

Interior: The interior in this Fastback is 95% complete and original. It even has that classic Volkswagen smell. The original headliner is in very nice shape with no tears, or rips. The floor carpet is missing, but the kick panel, under dash, and rocker carpet pieces are there. The door panels have been cut for speakers but overall they are in nice shape as well. The U.S. spec high back seats are in original shape and have tears, but the rare backseat has the desirable deluxe center armrest. The dashpad is original and has some cracks. The front dash looks complete. The speedometer is the more desirable version with the trip meter. The front trunk looks like a total time warp where it’s still original paint and still has the original front trunk liner that’s in great shape! The paint sticker is still there as well. The rear trunk has been painted black and is missing its original liner. There are no signs of major accident damage in the front or rear.

Chassis: The chassis on this Fastback is like “most” California Type 3s...DRY! There are only a few pinholes in the pan itself. The odometer reads 55,331 but we are confident that this is not the actual mileage. The odometers on these vehicles only contain 5 digits…so after 99999 miles, they reset to 00000 and start over. The chassis, body, and dash VIN tag all match.

Mechanical: While this Fastback is mechanically complete, it is not in running or driving condition and a complete revival service will be required before it can be put back on the road. The condition of the automatic transmission and fuel injected US. spec. engine are unknown. The engine is complete with all fuel injection components and does turn over by hand. Brake pedal has pressure, but the brake system should be completely serviced. There is no battery. Before connecting one, the electrical system should be inspected.

Final Thoughts: We’ve specialized in Type 3 restorations and parts since 1990 and have seen our fair share of Squarebacks, Notchbacks, and Fastbacks over the years. We’ve seen very low mile original vehicles, fully restored vehicles, daily drivers, and not-so-good beaters/parts cars. This Fastback is one of the better ones. Original California cars are getting harder and harder to find and it seems like every Type 3 these days has been bumped in the front or rear or has been messed with in some way, shape, or form. Even though it’s not running or driving, this car is much further along than others that have issues such as major body damage, major rust, or are incomplete and missing most of the original parts. Being 95% complete, this 46 year old car is leaps and bounds above others in terms of parts hunting & gathering. The other good part is that most of the stuff needed to restore a car like this is readily available through us at ISP West. With a couple weekends of wrenching, this Fastback could be ready to hit the streets. This car is currently located at our facility in Carson, CA. Viewings are available by appointment only. We would love to see this beauty back on the road!
