Description of 1991 Volvo 240 Base Wagon 4-Door

With great regret, I am selling my beloved manual 5-speed 1991 Volvo 240 Wagon. I am the second owner of this car and she has been the most faithful and wonderful companion to me for many years. I bought her in New Canaan, Ct, in 1998 from the first owner who always serviced her at Stamford Volvo. I moved with her to Princeton, NJ where I maintained her at first with Princeton Volvo and then with a legendary NJ Volvo mechanic Art, of Art’s garage (found through Car Talk). Last summer I moved the car to Nantucket, MASS because I needed an on island car for my son. Before moving it up, I had the car throughly serviced and inspected both by Art and another local Volvo whisperer. Both deemed her in great mechanical shape and in Volvo terms still youthful and ready to go at least another 200,000 miles. She passed both NJ and Massachusetts inspections in 2016.

Now I’ve come to terms with needing to pass the torch to someone who is looking for a loyal, workhorse Volvo and who is able to give her the love that she needs because while I really want to keep this car, I am not at all mechanically minded and I no longer need two cars.

This car is a true warrior. She is mechanically sound and in solid condition and still has most of her original parts, ie., all the floor mats, head rests, hubcaps, carrier top, manuals and maintenance records and even a stockpile of various parts. The radio still works (the cassette player most likely as well but I no longer have any cassettes and can’t check that.) Air conditioning and power windows are also still operational. The interior is in great condition for a car of her age. The exception being the driver’s seat which has cracked a bit and the passenger side door pocket and one of the speakers. There are no stains and the interior roof lining is spotless. The car has never been smoked in nor has she been in an accident, though once someone cut behind me as I was backing up and the bumper got slightly pushed in on the right (see pic). Windshield and windows are in great shape.

She does show the usual wear and tear of a Volvo her age. The exterior has a couple of scratches and a little rust on the sides (see pics). The paint, is original; it shows its age and could be refreshed. The odometer stopped working at 177,994 miles about a year before it was moved to Nantucket. I estimate that the total mileage is now a bit north of 200,000. A few months ago the fuel gauge stopped working as well (not a pressing problem on a small island). The oil gauge and clock work fine. But most recently the third brake light stopped working — apparently a common problem that in the right hands is readily fixed but this is not one that I can figure out on my own.

So I am hoping to sell this fabulously loyal car to someone who will love her as much as I have and who is able to be attentive to the bits and bots of maintenance that will keep her and her new owner happy for many years to come.
