Description of 1987 Alfa Romeo Spider |
Fully renovated with rebuilt engine and transmission, new paint and canvas top, new shocks and tires, new fuel pumps, new battery, and many other new parts including a Kenwood AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with 8 speakers and a 200-watt powered subwoofer. The car is rust-free and has never been hit. Only 800 miles since renovation. Everything works, including the clock, power windows and mirrors, cigarette lighter and air conditioner. This Alfa was complete and straight when I bought it in 2001, but it came with a salvage title. My understanding is that the car had been stolen sometime in the past and partially stripped (doors, seats, wheels, interior panels). The Alfa was recovered with no damage to the body or drivetrain, and the previous owner put it back together using parts from an older Alfa Spider. During the renovation I replaced all the incorrect bits and pieces with genuine, correct Spider Veloce parts. The car now has a clear Florida title. I'm selling it because I have five cars and no place to put them all. The following is only a short list of things that were done during the renovation. All systems were examined, tested and brought back to top condition. The engine has new pistons, rings, cylinders and crankshaft bearings. The cylinder head was reconditioned and contains new valves, guides, springs and head gasket. The fuel injectors, spark plugs and wires, belts and hoses, motor mounts, starter, water pump and battery were replaced with new parts. The transmission was rebuilt and contains new bearings, seals and synchros (all 5 of them). The clutch pressure plate, disc and throwout bearing are new. The air conditioner has a new compressor and hoses, and it has been updated to run on R134a refrigerant. The suspension has new tie rod ends, shock absorbers and rebound straps. The radiator and fuel tank have been acid-cleaned. All electrical switches, relays and sensors were tested for proper function. The body was stripped to bare metal and re-painted with super-premium House of Kolor basecoat and Standox clearcoat. The convertible top, tires and Ansa muffler are new, as are several interior and exterior trim parts. The parts cost alone was over $8000, plus hundreds of hours of labor. The reserve price is very reasonable and considerably below the cost of restoration. The Alfa runs and drives great. The engine is strong and runs cool. The transmission shifts smoothly with no second-gear crunch. Braking is excellent, and the steering and suspension are tight. All fluids have been replaced with synthetic lubricants. The air conditioning blows cold, and the radio sounds great. Everything is there, including the jack, spare tire, boot cover, factory service manual and original steering wheel. The only defects are some minor cracks in a few plastic interior trim pieces, a strange resonance in the catalytic converter that momentarily occurs when the engine passes through 4000 rpm, and gold plating on the Nardi steering wheel that is starting to lift in a few places. All in all this is a very nice car restored to nearly new condition – not quite a show car but very nice. |
