This past winter, I was asked by a friend to take a look at this 86 Spider and see if I could assist in the sale of the Alfa. The long time owner had passed away recently and his widow was left with the task of selling the car. They were originally from California and purchased the Alfa in 1998. 2 years later, they relocated to Michigan where the Alfa saw very little use. The Alfa has a wonderful history, and has always been maintained at exclusive Alfa shops according to the extensive records. Always covered in the garage, and only used on the nicest days.

When I arrived, I brought out to the garage, and underneath the cover was this beautiful Alfa Spider. It looked pretty much like a new car. It was 5 degrees the day I looked at it, and with the turn of the key, the Alfa fired right up! The owner's wife said the Alfa was always ultra reliable and always started easily. Never an issue with the battery going flat. I must say that I was impressed.

The owner's wife had never sold a car before, and asked me if I could help her sell it. Of course I offered my assistance. I asked her what her time frame was to sell it, and I was told she needed to sell it immediately. She was packed and ready to move back to California, and the the Alfa was the last thing that needed to be sold. Since it was the dead of winter, I told her there were not a lot of options considering her time frame. She is a wonderful person and was really in a tight spot. I made the decision to help her out and I ended up buying the Alfa from her so that she could make her move back to California. I had assured her I would find a good "Alfa" home for her husband's Spider Veloce.

Mechanicallythe Alfa is in great condition. It pretty much has had only 2 Alfa shops work on it for it's entire history. Both are well known shops with deep roots within the Alfa Romeo community - in California it was maintained by "Barber's Shop" in Sacramento and here in Michigan work all work was performed at Trail Auto Repair in Dearborn Heights MI. Both shops are true Alfa specialty shops. The Alfa comes with an extensive set of records documenting it's maintenance history throughout it's life. I believe the records start at 1987. In going through the records, it is quite impressive how well maintained the Alfa has been. Anything that was ever needed was taken care of. The records show that between 1986 - 1996 the Alfa was accumulated the bulk of the miles. Being that it was in California it was used daily. Records show that between 1998 and 2016 the Alfa has covered about 15,000 miles. Had oil changes religiously throughout it's life.

The following work was just recently performed at a cost of close to $2000.00 to get the Alfa ready for it's new owner:

Brand new Convertble Top & weatherstrip & weatherstrip bracket for the header bar. This is a top of the line OEM cloth that came from Alfa Romeo in Italy. The best that is available. This was done through the local Alfa shop using one of the best shops in town to install the top. They have done many Alfa tops and the fit and finish on the top is fantastic. This cost close to $1000.00

Brand new Windshield with new oem gasket. Also done through the Alfa shop. This windshield is an OEM correct windshield with built in antenna. Bronze tint. Once again installed by a shop experienced with installing Alfa windshields.

New center section of the exhaust. This was replaced with an OEM part.

New center support for the driveshaft. OEM as well.

Radiator redone due to small pin hole leak that was detected.

I drove the Alfa with the top down this past summer, and enjoyed every moment. Everywhere I went, I would receive compliments on how nice it looks. The Alfa starts easily and the engine runs strong. Has good oil pressure and no evidence of excess oil burning. No leaks on the garage floor. Clutch works fine with no gearbox issues. Driveshaft/U-Joints are fine with no issues (Has new center support). Brakes work fine. Exhaust is fine with a new oem center section. Will be needing new tires. Cooling system is in good condition with a recently refurbished radiator due to a pin hole that was detected. I have had the Alfa over 100 mph and it runs and drives great.

The interior is in great conditon showing very little wear at all. It pretty much looks like an interior from a 30K car. It's all original and very well preserved. The door panels are in excellent condition and looks like it has not been taken apart. They typically never go back together correctly and due to their heavy weight, never stay attached the door correctly. Carpet is in nice condition with no wear. Has custom logo floor mats that look very nice. Leather seats are in good shape with the exception of a split on the seam on the passenger side seat bottom. The leather is a bit dry and could use some treatment. The dash does have the typical cracks near the defroster. All interior door handles work correctly. Both power windows operate as they should and at normal speed - not the typical slow movement that most have. All gauges are in working condition with no issues. All electricals working properly. All switches and knobs are original and correct. Has period correct Blaupunkt radio that works fine. Lastly, it has factory air conditioning that works fine with no issues.

The body is in beautiful condition as shown in the pictures. Has a clear car fax. Paint finish on the hood looks like a mirror as shown in the pictures. There is absolutely no rust on the body or underside. Underneath the Alfa is clean and shows how well the California climate can preserve a car. There are no door dings and no stone chips on the nose panel. The finish on the spoiler shows some wear where it was pushed down to close the trunk. Trunk badge has become De laminated - a new badge is included. The owner's wife had told me that several years ago that the Alfa was hit while parked at the local grocery store parking lot. It was fixed to a very high standard at one of the top body shops in the area. The paint looks very nice. Factory Alloys in nice condition with no curb rash. The Alfa presents itself very nicely considering it's age. Most people think it looks like a new car.
