Description of 1991 Alfa Romeo 164 L |
Up for sale is my father's 1991 Alfa Romeo 164L. My dad bought the car in December of 2007 and drove it regularly since then. He passed away unexpectedly in November of last year and the car has been in storage for the past several months. The car runs and drives well, and is very clean for its age inside and out. I have listed any/all issues that I am aware of below. I have a FL title in hand. The Good: Car has less than 5,000 miles on a new clutch Appears that timing belt was replaced at 106,910 miles according to a service record on Carfax 100% Florida vehicle throughout its life, zero rust or corrosion issues Front seats recently reupholstered with new matching leather Matching Michelin tires in good condition The Bad: The car was involved in a fender bender in December of 2009 that resulted in it being deemed a total loss due to the scarcity of parts. It was hit in the right rear corner and needed a bumper cover, tail light, and bodywork to the trunk lid and quarter panel. My dad bought used parts and had a local body shop repair the car. With the exception of the trunk lid requiring a solid closing, there is no evidence of the repairs. I suspect that the trunk latch could be adjusted to make it close easier, but it works fine as is. The A/C went out a few years ago and the compressor and expansion valve were replaced after the system was flushed out. From then on, the air blew cool but never ice cold. I would bet that the condenser has blockage and needs to be replaced to get the system back to 100% efficiency, but I am not an Alfa mechanic and don't have time to try it. The radio is not working. This could be as simple as a fuse or perhaps the radio needs to be replaced. The power seats move forward and backward, the seat backs move, but the seats do not move up and down. I would guess that the switch contacts are corroded or the lift motors are stuck from never being used. The felt guides for the rear windows are worn/dried out so the windows cock sideways a little bit and bind as you are rolling them up. The front windows work fine. The weatherstripping for the sunroof is also worn/dried out and there is a roughly 6" gap at the front where the weatherstripping has torn. It doesn't leak into the car, but it should be replaced to prevent future problems. The left front corner lamp/turn signal is missing its lens. See picture. These come up for sale pretty regularly on eBay. The driver's side mirror has a crack in the plastic housing. It's not falling off the car or anything, but it should be replaced or taken apart and epoxied. The power mirror adjustments do not work. My guess would be dirty contacts in the switch or motors due to hardly ever being used. This is everything that I have identified that is wrong with the car. I do not have time to fix any of it myself or I would. |
