Description of 1968 AMC AMX |
We have a 1968 AMC AMX that I bought from the original owner in 1984. Less than 24K original miles. The car has not be driven on the street since 1971. The original owner only used it as a bracket racer since then. When I bought the car it was stored in the back of a garage covered in dust but intact. Once purchased by me, the car was stored in my garage until the late 1990's when I decided to finally try to bring the car back to life. You will notice the NJ inspection sticker for 1971 is still on the front windshield. In 1998, I sent the original engine to be rebuilt since it had sat for so long. The motor build ended up with a pretty stout engine. The original engine had been modified with racing pistons, cam and valve train. So I decided to go a little further and add a Competition Cams solid lifter camshaft with roller rocker arms. The engine had AMC part number super stock rods that were reconditioned. The crankshaft was good so it is still standard. The block ended up being bored 60 over and new racing pistons were fitted. Compression ration of 12 to 1. I had a custom oil pan made that holds about 8 quarts. The engine currently has an Eldebrock R4B intake with a Holley 950 CFM 3 barrel carburetor. The distributor is a hard to find dual point with tach drive used on the 1969 SS AMX cars. Ignition is courtesy of an MSD 6A box. The car has Hooker Super Comp headers that feed into a basically stock exhaust system. I have never run the car with open headers. The exhaust tips are originals. Has a small header leak at the exhaust gasket. The engine is backed up by a Mcleod steel flywheel, steel scattershield and racing clutch. The transmission was modified by the original owner to a race only operation. It is a wide ratio T-10 that only has synchronizers for the first to second gear shift. Second to third and third to fourth is not synchronized so it bangs into gears very quickly. Shifter is a Hurst Competition Plus. Shift handle is a custom shorty that makes shifts real fast. The AMC 20 rear has been modified with reinforcements per the book Performance American Style. The axles are Henrys one piece units with long studs. Gear ratio 4.10 to 1. It has the factory limited slip differential. I had a driveshaft loop added that is mounted off of the transmission cross member. No alterations have been made to the body. As a testament to the low miles, the lower ball joints are still the factory original riveted in units. They have never been replaced and don't need replacement. Back in 1968 at least they put grease fittings in. The body is mint. It has never been hit or had any rust. I had the car stripped to bare metal and painted the Original Calcutta Russet Metalic in 2000. Overall the paint is very good with some stone chips on the rear lower fenders. The running board trim is reproduction although I still have the originals. The underside is beautiful. Trunk and floor like new. All glass is original. All stainless and emblems are original. The grill is original and unrestored in great shape. No broken tabs or bars. The taillight housings are original. The hood is one of the early designs that is prone to crack at the front. This one is perfect. No bends, repairsor cracks. Both front and rear bumpers were redone in 2000 and are showing their age again. Not bad but they could use a redo. Wheels are Wheel Vintiques reproduction versions. They are 15 inch and wider than original. The interior is all original except for the carpet and headliner. Dash, steering wheel and all panels are original. The seats are original. The foam is starting to turn to powder so the seats will need a rework soon. One hole in drivers seat as shown. The car has the original AM radio with dealer added reverb. All of this works. All lights and accessories work. The heater is hooked up, electric windshield wipers and turn signals work. Factory tachometer is not connected. Gas gage and temperature gage work. This car is street legal as currently configured. Windows roll up and down and has original seat belt harness. I have the build sheet and owners card. The build sheet shows that this was a go pack car as ordered. I have hardly ever driven this car in the 35 years I have owned it. I have had quite a few AMX's and this is the best one I have ever owned. A no excuse car. It has been to a few of the east coast AMC events and made a few passed down the 1/4 mile. It could be made a factory stock show car if desired since nothing permanent has been done. I don't have the time to work on the car anymore so I am hoping that someone new will take over the job of preserving this period correct 1960's musclecar.
