Description of 1971 AMC Javelin SST |
1971 401 Javelin SST Rust free California car purchased in Los Angeles in 1996. With the vintage decals and the paint as-is, this car has a certain feel and patina you just can’t re-create. Those were the days when you partied, hauled ass, and never held the brakes during a burn-out. The only thing you held was the half full beer between the seat and the center console ! This car needs restoration, but someone should think twice before they change the exterior. Clean California non-op title with original black and yellow plates. Car is not running (more details below). When I bought it, it had a built motor (headers, cam, manifold, etc.), but bent push rods and broken rings. The motor was running and putting out HP, but smoked when vacuum applied to cylinders. I had the motor rebuilt at a performance shop and installed a 2”-3” dual exhaust with Walker-Super-Turbos. Already came with…..
Engine is pure Big Block, producing 300-350 horsepower and plenty of torque to drift the car at will at low speeds. From a dead stop, with no brake and posi, the car will lay rubber until road speed catches up with engine red line (before a click shift to second). The car definitely lived the party lifestyle, being pushed hard and rev’d big time, but I was able to drive it into the garage (not smoking or knocking) 8 years ago. I'll be improving this add with more info and photos, as well as popping in a battery and possibly starting repairs, but for now, go with what's here........ I truly believe the lower end is solid, so right now, my diagnosis is the cam is flat and a collapsed lifter needs to be replaced, but until further notice, assume there could be metal from the cam in the engine. I’m about to install a new starter (trying to wrap it better with heat shielding), but currently, the starter and right (wrapped) header are out. On this round of bidding (with the current reserve), also assume the gasoline in the tank is bad the car, overall, is in need of a mechanical “go-thru” and restoration. Master Cylinder needs to be replaced (I have it). AC removed, and I have it and some other original parts and other goodies. If the reserve is not met and work is done on the car, the reserve will be increased. If the reserve is not met, I have the option to sell this car locally. RESTORATION DONE BY ME... Rebuilt motor Front windshield Brakes New front a-Arm bushings New front ball joints Rebuilt steering box New pitman arm Rebuilt rear leaf springs and bushings Rebuilt transmission with a shift-kit New carpet EXTERIOR In excellent condition. Surface rust in a couple spots I have all the trim Roof vinyl is good condition Can’t find any evidence of this ar being in an accident Front and Rear Bumpers are Straight Front fender paint slightly off from rest of car INTERIOR It’s Good, but this car is nothing close to perfect. I’ll try to get more details out on what issues may exist, but please assume that lots of little things may need to be fixed. Doors close solidly and seal really well, but windows need help to roll up (pull them with your hand when “rolling” up). On May-26-18 at 15:31:01 PDT, seller added the following information: AS JUST POINTED OUT BY AN INTERESTED BUYER....... APPARENTLY THIS CAR IS A 360, BUT CONVERTED TO A 401. "401" IS CONFIRMED AS BEING ON THE BLOCK. I WAS UNABLE TO EDIT MY ORIGINAL LISTING INFORMATION, BUT WAS ABLE TO ADD THIS TEXT. THANKS FOR LOOKING. |
