Description of 1990 Audi Other wagon(avant)

Up for sale is my 1990 Audi 200 Quattro Avant, 2.2L inline-5, 10-valve, 5-speed short through shifter, 17” wheels, Good interior and body. RARE Find.

I reluctantly am selling, as I live in DC and no longer have time(2 year old twins) nor a parking space to store this. Additionally we rarely drive, so life priorities take precedent over my love for this car.

History:

Purchased in 2006 as the third owner, se pre-history below, I used this as my primary drove while in Grad school in Syracuse, NY for 1 year, used primarily on weekends and occasional trips around town, drove cross country to Seattle, were it stayed as a daily driver about 6 miles each day, and drove to DC in 2000, were I used it as a daily driver for 6 years, and has been sitting unused for the past 2 years, at wife’s request for a modern(automatic) car to transport our twins.

The car has been babied, hardly ever over 4,000 RPM, only reached near redline on a handful of occasions, but boy is it fun when you let it loose. It is faster than my brothers 1987 & 1984 Porsche 911, my Dad’s 2001 Boxter S, etc. Was said to be 300 HP at time of new turbo and engine rebuild & Chip. I believe this, as if you push this, it is extremely quick and great handling. Stock was 180 hp. Original selling price for car, inflation adjusted would be over $85,000.

Car overview:

Factory options-heavey duty brakes(UrS4-Girling twin piston floating calipers on large vented rotors-this is not a normal upgrade!), ABS, Heater black leather seats, Pearl White Paint, roof rails.

Complete engine rebuild, new clutch and pressure plate, all suspension, bushings, bearings replaced, engine/transmission mounts replaced, driveshaft rebuilt, power steering pump replacement, w/ new hoses, rear calipers rebuilt, new parking rake caliper, new windshield. Engine: SJM ecu(to 1.8 bar with overboost) 14 psi peak boost, bosch turbo bypass valve for quicker turbo spool-up( this makes a big difference!) magnacore spark plugs, short link shifter, synthetic oils always, all Koni shocks, Eibach springs, Derlin Subframe bushings, 20v steering damper, slotted rotors all, goodbridge braided stainless steel Teflon brake hoses, V8 rear tailslights(so it is all red all the way across, looks much better,) Delan trailer hitch(1/4” I think) VDO boost gauge, Fosgate speakers, PIAA Superwhite headlights.

This bought with 19 Porsche 993 cup wheels specially drilled at Porsche Wheel factory in Italy for this car. A pothole one the interstate resulted in two wheels getting badly bent, although I took them to several wheel specialty places, nobody could fix them, I had also had 15” BBS winter tires/wheels for the car. I saved one of the 19”’s as a full size space kept in trunk well, which is HUGE. It now runs on some older 90’s/early 200’s aftermarket 17” wheels that had been used on my brothers 1998 S6,with almost brand new tires. The alignment is slightly out, but alignment shop could not un-seize the rods, so it wears abit more on the inside edge than the outside. Would need new tie rods for a perfect alignment, but you can not notice this when driving as the steering is extremely tight. It does corner amazing on the 19”s, still pretty good on the 17”s, decided that while in the City, 19’s was hard with all of the potholes. The 17’s have some of the paint bubbling and flaking, but overall not bad. They are straight. Due to fronts wearing irregularly, and quicker than rears, I currently have a mismatched set, fairly nice Toyo front and Conti Extreme contact rear, both less than 2,000 miles. The late 90’s audi quality can be felt throughout, everything closes and opens with a solid thud, craftsmanship of interior is amazing. Still has factory radio/cassette player, I have used a Bluetooth adapter for this.

The short through shifter is also extremely tight and a joy to shift, honestly the best shift I have ever used with very good linkage. The clutch is also good.

Not sure the Max speed, never tried, but cruses on hi-way at 70-80 very easily. Did get it to 100 once no problem out on the salt flats in Nevada.

Engine: The bypass valve on the turbo means that this basically has no turbo lag, which is very nice. It was recommended to me when I bought it to get the turbo rebuilt every 6 years, but I have not had an issue with it, so no need to rebuild. I starts cold, with abit of hesitation sometimes, give a tap on the gas, and starts everytime. I have never had a problem with it not starting, except when there was a elec short(3-times now) which drained the battery. It idles fine, around 1000 at start-up and 700 rpm once warm. I have never had a major engine issue. Mostly hose, suspension, and elec issues. I have a cold start video from a couple days ago, email me and I can send to you.

Snow: this thing is latterly amazing in the snow. I drove in a snowstorm from Syracuse NY to DC on May 2007, counted over 50 cars and 20 semi-trucks off the road, by the middle of the drive, nobody was on the road, but this car, with snow tires has amazingly good handling and grip. Many mountain trips in the snow with this car, AMAZING.

Utility: The trunk is huge, rear seats fold down flat for HUGE open area. Rear seats are huge, front seats both hug your body and fit my 6’-4” frame nicely.

Interior: leather is still in excellent condition, with exception of driver seat which has cracks. Used lexol on it 2x a year always, still soft-ish. Original Riccaro seats. Have some weather mats for front and reg carpet ones for rear. All carpet is in good shape. Driver side and RR leather on door has come loose and needs new glue to hold it up. FR door lock doesn’t work from outside, must use driver side, but it is suction system for all locks which still lock and unlock fine. Dash is in excellent shape, both wood and vinyl. Glove box light might not work. Headliner is showing it’s age, see picts.

Items worth noting:

1- Odometer stopped working several years ago at 19?,??? mi, I had a replacement cluster put in, but that one also did not work. I am told that it is not a problem at the wheel, but the cluster itself, which I have a quote for $225 for a rebuild from Southern Electronics, LLC.730-A Research Road, Richmond, VA 23236, but have not done this. Car will be sold with unknown miles, I estimate to be at around 250,000

2- Front driver steering wheel is currently missing the airbag, when purchased I had the replacement, but never put it in and now I don’t know where it is, probably somewhere in my attic buried, if I find it, I’ll let you know, but I wouldn’t hold out hope. Due to no air bag, the middle of the steering wheel is now cracked from trying to hit the horn(still works fine BTW,) and pushing to hard into the void by accident.

3- AC worked perfect when purchased in 206, had had a recharge, by 2009/2010 stopped lowing cold and I have never gotten a recharge. You could disconnect the AC or get a recharge or convert it to 410A.

4- I have some extra parts- brake hoses, door window switches, belt, extra filters, plugs, etc which will be included in the car.

5- One part of the lower trim on exterior of right side has come loose, needs re-attachment.

6- Gas cap cover lost spring to keep it close, it still stays closed when driving, but some stupid kid/person bent this one day while parked, so it has a bend in it, see pict.

7- Sunroof always worked fine, upon getting ready for sale, it can pop open, but isn’t going back, you’ll want to look at this, but motor still seems to work as I can hear it, maybe just stuck? Regardless, the seal is starting to come loose, still seals fine for now, but might want to replace at some point.

8- Gas pedal cover came off, in glove box waiting to be re-installed. Drives fine without it, I don’t even notice, unless barefoot maybe?

9- I just notices a small bubble pocket on r/f upright between windshield and door, with a minor amount of rust, see pict.

10- A chrome trim at front grill needs to be re-glued.

11- Front left hood hinge bracket just bent, how does that happen? I will try and bend it back, but might need replacement for perfect hood fit.

12- I had new rear trunk struts installed a couple years ago.

13- Would clean and polish 2x a year, paint is in OK condition, some definite small scratches, could use a professional buff job I think. Hood is the worst off. Lower body panels have some gunk build-up on them that could get a better clean, tar, etc.

14- Somehow lost the rear trunk cover in 2007 in a move.

15- Windshield wiper switch contacts are old, have to spray contact solution in occasionally to get it to work, usually on high only. Looked into getting a new one, but very hard to find because it has the avant rear wiper also.

16- Driver door threshold trim has come off, needs to be re-glued.

17- Car is currently insured, but not licensed or registered, so can not be driven on the road, you would want to flatbed this home, yes, flatbed only for this full time all wheel drive system is a must!!!

18- Has Tule foot-pack and crossbars on and I also have several bike racks for this if you are interested, I could through them in at a nominal cost.

19- Full Bentley 3-volume set of service manuals. I thought I took a pict of this, but don’t see it now.

20- Coolant hose is currently busted, I have not fixed … still starts and runs fine, but this hose will need to be replaced.

Bottom line: This is NOT a showroom quality car, it is a well kept enthusiasts car in good shape. Do not email offering a lowball price or trade of any kind. It would break my heart to see this go as someone’s sh$t-kicker daily driver to be driven into the ground. I do not need a gently used 1997 civic, refrigerator, or anything else, so no trades. I would only be happy seeing this go to a real enthusiast as a parts car or to keep it up. I have only seen 3 or 4 of these cars in person, EVER. These were only imported from 89-91, and according to import records, with only 184 imported in 1990. 1991 does have the 20 valve upgrade, which you can do to this car, but I have not done.

Current owner service records: I do not have all oil change records, but it always got synthetic, used Mobil-1 10W40 until they discontinued, replaced by 0W50, which was too light for oil pressure and switched to Catrol 15W40 synthetic there after, circa 2013

07/?? /07- full service at now closed Foreign car specials in Madison WI, operator Chris Beee was the best foreign performance car mechanic in WI, and Road & Track Magazine columnist Peter Egan would constantly write about this place, wasknown for specialty older model performance cars: timing belt replacement, full brakes, tune-up and several other smaller Items I can’t remember, I can’t find the receipt.

07/05/07 new 6” JL sub speaker, there is a sub tube in rear-left wheel kicker panel providing nice base, front speakers also upgraded from factory, forget the make.

8/22/06 CV boot replacement, rear rotors & pads, right front window pull.

6/21/11-ignition switch

7/25/07 – replace rotors and pads in rear, previous install was wrong.

08/21/08 new turn signal relay, fix wiring short, fix dome lamp, replace heater valve, pressure test of cooling system-good

11/09/09 new batter, door lock broken, oil and coolant replacement.

2010- only known accident, if you can cal it that, on a hi-way onramp, with 2-onramps merging, a large SUV swerved and almost hit my car, I swerved to avoid an totaling accident at 60 MPH, but went up over a curb and damaged the left front suspension. This dislodges the strut which put a dent on the underside of the hood, which you can still see, but is minor. I had front left control arm replaces and all new Koni shocks at front replaced with Audi-motive sport tuned shocks. I do not have the receipt. Car was lowed by previous owner. See picts.

All below services at Road and Track Motorsport in Silver Spring Maryland by Suni(Sonny,) and expert late model Audi mechanic, feel free to contact him with knowledge of the car if serious about buying, as I trust him immensely. 301.563.6734. Most every time I had it serviced he would do a complete look over of the car and often a full tune-up, as I went in 1-2 times a year. He is extremely good, except doesn’t like dealing with electrical problems, which tend to be a issue with later model Audi’s.

1/13/11 F&R tie rod end outer replacement, brake cables replaced. Tie rods seized for adjustment.

11/23/11 Accessory drive belt replaced

1/10/12 new(used) rack & Pinion, PS pump, new alternator, New RL wheel bearing, exhaust hangers, CV boot FR, PS hose, PS reservoir, motor clean

I had several more services, but can not find all of the receipts.
